Rainham Hall is a charming and remarkably fine example of a Queen Anne house, built in 1729 by an enterprising merchant and ship's captain, John Harle. The hall and its cluster of associated buildings were a focal point for his trading activities, which were a factor in the development of Rainham Village in the 18th century. It is a rare surviving witness of the river trade which forms an important part of local and regional history. The hall is nestled in the heart of Rainham village on the far eastern fringes of London. Surrounded by a contrasting landscape of big skies, wild marshland and thriving industry, Rainham Hall has been quietly biding its time. We are now undertaking a major restoration project to restore and bring to life the Hall, its Stableblock and the Coach House. Building work started in February 2014 and should be completed by our opening in October 2015. We successfully applied to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant of £1.46 Million which combined with grants from Veolia North Thames Trust and Biffa Award, has allowed us to push ahead with delivering an exciting project built on understanding, community involvement and innovation.
We have lived in Rainham for over 30 years and never visited this wonderful historical house and it’s garden. We arrived at lunch time so decided to sample the cafe here and we were not disappointed. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, there are soups, jacket potatoes, sandwiches, toastier snd panninis, a good selection of cakes and scones too, as well as by and cold drinks. It was quite busy there too, they also have plenty of outside sweating for warmer weather. On entering the house we were given a brief history of the owners over the years, which was extremely interesting. We were then left to walk around at our own pace, allowed to sit and touch anything in the house. The gardens are big and I expect in the summer very busy too, you can just go in the gardens for free, there is a great children’s play area there too, and plenty of grass for picnics. Well worth a visit and we will definately be popping back for Lunch again
We are a charity secondhand bookshop supporting the local anglican parish church of St. Margaret's, Rainham (Kent). Alongside an extensive range of guides and maps of local, national and international areas, we provide an Internet hotspot. And tomatoes when available.
