Filled with 18th-century paintings and ornate rooms, this white and gold palace is surrounded by a 1400-acre park complete with fountains, bridges, the Agate Pavilion bathhouse and the Great Pond. The Palace also has a famous Amber Room, stolen by Nazi troops during WWII, but now recreated by Russian craftsmen.
The Catherine Palace is named after Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great. Originally a modest two-storey building commissioned by Peter for Catherine in 1717, the Catherine Palace owes its awesome grandeur to their daughter, Empress Elizabeth, who chose Tsarskoye Selo as her chief summer residence. Starting in 1743, the building was reconstructed by four different architects. The building was to be built to compete with Versailles. The resultant palace, completed in 1756, is nearly 1km in circumference, with elaborately decorated blue-and-white facades featuring gilded atlantes. The interiors of the Catherine Palace are no less spectacular. Another place worth seeing. A beautiful palace and park complex.

Tsarskoselskaya amber workshop is located a few minutes' walk away from the Catherine palace in Pushkin, St.Petersburg. It is the very plcae where the famous Amber Room was reconstructed. Till this day the Amber workshop is actively involved in restoration of the Catherine palace and has a wonderful team of 100 professional restorers.
Very informative visit where we learned the attributes of amber and were able to handle samples of amber. There are pieces of amber work in process for viewing up close and artisans working on premise. The process is clearly explained and we gained an understanding of the intricate work that goes into the pieces that have such delicate carvings. Since we visited the Amber Workshop first, we had a better appreciation of the workmanship that is represented in various sections of the large scale Palace Amber Room restoration so that we could look for them specifically once we were in the room. This knowledge helped us enjoy the Amber Room even more since we gained all that knowledge first hand and up close. Although the Palace Amber Room restoration is complete, the workshop continues on with other commissions. If your schedule allows the Amber workshop is worth a 30 minute add on to a visit to Catherine's Palace.
