Ptuj, the oldest recorded city in Slovenia, has been inhabited since the late Stone Age and developed from a Roman military fort. In the early 20th century the majority of the residents were of German extraction, but today the population is largely Slovenes. Residents of Ptuj are known as Ptujčani.

Great building in the center of a very nice little town. Good to look at. Proportional, pleasant-looking, very cozy, with a real small-town feel. Small streets around it, good cafes, well worth a walk in the morning.

Ptuj City Tower

It is practically impossible to miss the city tower. It is interesting not only because of its baroque onion dome, but also the antique monuments in its walls. An attentive visitor will notice that the tower only has a clock on three sides. Citizens decided not to put a clock on the wall facing the castle as a sign of protest when the lords of the castle refused to pay their share.

Church of St. George

The main parish church boasts a gorgeous interior with striking Laib’s three-winged altar, choir bench from the 15th century, and the statute of its patron saint St. George defeating a dragon. The 12th century church was expanded several times, resulting in a mixture of styles, with the Gothic and baroque elements prevailing.
