Viedma Glacier is located in Los Glaciares National Park in the Province of Santa Cruz and is the largest in Argentina. It flows directly from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field to the lake. Its front is 40mt from the level of the lake. Their risings are located in the heart of the ice field between 1.500 y 2.200 msnm. It has some dark, deep lines on the surface that are volcanic ashes strips mixed with ice. Also, it has suffered many repressions but not as important as the rest of the glaciers. Viedma Lake was discovered by Antonio de Viedma, in 1877 when Francisco Pascacio Moreno and Carlos Maria Moyano where on an expedition and discovered is location and characteristics. It belongs to the hydric basin of the Santa Cruz River.
A thoroughly nice and knowledgeable young mountain guide was assigned to our bus and boat tour on Feb. 20th, when splendid weather made this excursion through the solitary Patagonian landscape an eye-candy with vistas of Fitz Roy on the way to the boat landing on Lake Viedma and a spectacular lake-bound trip to the glacier.

"Cueva de las Manos" takes you back in time to a moment in history when aboriginal tribes devoted their time and effort to illustrate their daily lives, their rituals and beliefs on the walls of the gorge. It is certainly a very interesting visit, not only for the cultural aspect of it, but also due to the impressive landscape where the paintings are displayed. Totally worth visiting!

End your day with a leisurely stroll down El Calafate’s main street, where you’ll find stores, internet access, tourist agencies and great restaurants for an evening repast.
Beautiful small city in the middle of the Argentine Patagonia, full of good restaurants, wide avenues, outdoor activities, parks, gentle people, views to the Andes mountain range, lakes and wide open range. We used this city as the entrance point to visit and navigate the Glacier Park lakes and see Perito Moreno Glacier from lake view. In short, one of the best travel experiences I have had in my life, is likely I will re-visit sometime soon.
