My wife and I have visited Vigo on a number of occasions and finally managed to visit the Cies Islands this summer and we are glad we did. The boat trip there is fantastic but when you reach the islands you are in for an even bigger treat. Lovely beaches, great walks and views from the cliff tops and also feeling very close to nature and the power of the sea as the Atlantic Ocean crashes into the islands on the west coast. Our only mistake was that we did book a later ferry for our return journey and we would have liked to stay longer and explore the islands further.

Just short bus ride from city centre you can find long stretch of unspoilt beach, well catered for all tastes with several bars, restaurants, kiosks, kids pools, picnic areas, for a perfect day at the beach, which locals and tourists seem to know all too well

We could see the Fortress from our restaurant on the seafront of Baiona and thought we would walk over to have a look at it. It is only €1 to get into the fortress which is excellent value as we spent the next couple of hours looking around it. It was a beautiful walk in the evening sun walking up steps, along ramparts, and enjoying the stunning views over the marina and the ocean. Well worth a visit.

The winery belongs to the D.O "Rias Baixas", is located at the southern end from the subarea "Val do Salnes" on the foot of a hillside called "Padrinan", where there are many immemorial small plots which provide the winery. This area has a privileged position over Sanxenxo village and the entrance of Pontevedra estuary,it has an own microclimate, optimal for the grape growing, which added to the geophysical peculiarities of the floor, makes a grape with a great balance between acidity and sugar with an optimum ripening grade. This fact with a doubtless fame on the sector, originated an albarino wine with own personality, which made bigger with the years.
Our party of 7 turned up without booking at 15.30 on a Wednesday and were warmly welcomed. We had our own tour, in English, which was really interesting and tasted 3 wines and one spirit accompanied by tasty snacks. The tour cost 3 euros each which was excellent value for money. Sandra, our tour guide, was wonderful and very well informed. Highly recommended! Don't trust your satnav to get you there - follow the instructions on their website or those from the tourist office.

Your first port of call before exploring the old town is the Tourist Information Office, itself in a historic building, where a map is available plus lots of information from the staff. This is a fascinating town to explore on foot, but beware of cars driving down the narrow alleys. You will find churches such as the Basilica de Santa Maria and the Iglesia de San Bartolome, former grand houses such as Pazo del Baron, informal squares with restaurants, bars, statues and fountains, plus the town's theatre which, although relatively modern, is designed to blend in with the town's architecture.
