What to do and see in Province of Granada, Andalucia: The Best Ski & Snowboard Areas

November 21, 2021 Darleen Reid

There’s an Arabic inscription that captures the essence of Granada in a few words: “There is nothing so sad as to be blind in Granada.” The perspicacity of this declaration becomes obvious as soon as you penetrate the austere walls of the Alhambra and take in the full majesty of the architecture, carvings and fountains of the Nasrid palaces. Your ticket (which should be bought well in advance following the instructions on the attraction’s website) also affords entry to the Renaissance Palace of Carlos V and to the exquisite gardens of the Generalife. If you are celebrating a special event, or are in the market for a splurge, you can stay in the lovely Parador, right on site. Make your way down into the city via the atmospheric old quarter of the Albaicin, with its tiny craft shops and restaurants, and head for the Cathedral and Royal Chapel. Also plan a visit to the crypt for the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella, the instigators of Spain’s imperial adventures to the New World and beyond. It’s worth making the short journey out of town to visit the Monasterio Cartuja, a fabulous Carthusian monastery in the baroque style. Admirers of the poet Lorca should make the effort to visit the Casa-Museo Federico Garcia Lorca in Fuente Vaqueros, about 11 miles from the city centre.

My husband, two daughters (aged 10 and 11) and I had a Family Lesson with Jonathan and we all loved it. Jonathan gave us some great tips that really helped our technique and allowed us to enjoy our skiing holiday even more. I'd have loved another couple of lessons but, unfortunately, we left it too late to book and all the slots were already taken.

Drove up to the pass from the south, Laroles. Plenty of hairpins. Low key space at the top with shut up buildings in September and display boards. This is the only road across the Sierra Nevada, at 2000 metres, about 6500 feet. Various hiking trails are signposted and there are picnic tables. We decided to follow one to Aldeire for a way to see if there was a view. We followed red and white markers and kept to the valley floor, heading for the watershed with the forest on our right. On reaching the top after 30 pretty easy minutes we were rewarded with a spectacular view across plains and distant mountains to the north and the mountain range to west culminating in Mulhacen, 3483 metres, the highest in Spain? We returned the same way and in the hour away we met nobody apart from a herd of semi-wild horses.

Sierra Nevada Granada

Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in Europe and the highest in Spain with a minimum height of 2,100m, where the Pradollano urbanization is located (being the highest urban nucleus in Andalusia) and a maximum height of 3,300m, its highest peak is Veleta which stands at 3,398m being the fourth highest summit in Spain only behind Teide (Tenerife), Mulhacén (Sierra Nevada) and Aneto (Pyrenees). It is located in the Sierra Nevada natural park and belongs to the municipality of Monachil in the province of Granada. One of its main characteristics is its good climate, the geographical situation in which it is found makes the Sun and good weather predominate and thanks to its high altitude the fallen snow is preserved, sometimes from the beginning of autumn until well into spring . Its more than 107kms of skiable terrain make Sierra Nevada one of the largest resorts in Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, making Sierra Nevada one of the preferred destinations for all lovers of skiing.

Sierra Nevada was a great experience. The infrastructure is working very well. Parking in a huge public garage located right under the central part of Sierra Nevada. Many hotels and restaurants are within convenient walking distance from the garage and so are the ski rental shops and also the efficient skilifts. The ski area offers great skiing for all kind of skiers aswell as nice restaurants with both indoor and outdoor seeting.
