The tour itinerary will unite the most significant places: the "ancient" church, the "new" church, both dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Monastery and the new sanctuary. The ancient church of the mid-1500s has a very simple façade and inside it is composed of a single baroque style nave. At a second entrance to the convent is the cell of Padre Pio and the crypt where the body of Padre Pio was housed before being transferred to the nearby sanctuary. The visit continues with the "new" church, built for the explicit desire of Padre Pio, with the intention of being able to accommodate in an appropriate manner the considerable flow of thousands of pilgrims that flowed ever more numerous to San Giovanni Rotondo. The tour ends at the Sanctuary, designed by architect Renzo Piano, one of the largest churches in Italy, capable of holding up to 7,000 people.

The ancient Siponto was inhabited since the Neolithic age and became one of the most important ports of Magna Graecia. Here you will visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the ancient cathedral of Siponto, a true jewel of Romanesque-Apulian art. Next to the basilica you can see the spectacular 3D reconstruction of the ancient early Christian basilica by Edoardo Tresoldi. 14 meters of braided metal for 7 tons of weight reproduce in a 1/1 scale the early Christian basilica that flanks the splendid medieval Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The project changes the landscape of the entire archaeological site and stems from the will of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities to provide coverage to the mosaic still present on the pre-existing basilica. Built between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the ancient cathedral of Siponto is one of the most significant monuments of the Apulian Romanesque: with a square plan, it also has a beautiful crypt, as wide as the church.

Tour details: The tour of Lucera with a licensed guide, starts from the Roman amphitheater dating back to the Augustan age and among the oldest and largest in southern Italy with a capacity between 16,000 and 18,000 spectators. It was built in honor of Augustus and the colony of Lucera, as attested by the inscription placed on the architraves of the entrance portals. After the visit of the amphitheater the tour continues on the other side of the town, the Swabian-Angevin fortress, one of the symbols of Lucera. Built on the Albano hill in the 13th century, it was an important Muslim settlement (after having been inhabited since the 3rd millennium AD) that came to house up to 60,000 Muslims arrived from Sicily and always loyal to the Swabian family. The tour continues in the historic center with a visit to the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, built by Charles II of the Angevin family in 1302, it is thought about the remains of the Saracen mosque.

I'm not from Lucera, but I spent a whole year on his streets and I totally fell in love. From the Roman to the medieval world, from the 600s to the Saracen towers, from the very good wine to the show that stretches at the foot of the Swabian-Angevin Fortress ... I want to convey all this in my visits.
