Erected during Roman times, this is the most ancient and photographed bridge in Florence, which is characterized by three arches and two wide arcades on each side housing the famous and unusual "botteghe" or shops.
The Ponte Vecchio is a must see when in Florence. Crossing the bridge itself is interesting, if only for the crowds of people, the history, and the path that leads to new streets to explore. The real beauty of the old bridge though is in a stroll along the Arno, especially at night to take advantage of the incredible reflections, to view the bridge from along the river.

The bridge is named after the ancient church in its vicinity and it is the oldest elliptic arch bridge in the world, with three thirty-meters wide arches. The bridge was built in the 16th century, designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati, the famous Florentine architect.

My husband and I discovered, accidentally, that Ponte alle Grazie is the perfect place to do a bit of birdwatching if you're a keen birder (as we are) and happen to be in Florence. There is a weir beneath the bridge that is frequented by many different species of heron - we saw little and great egrets, grey, night and squacco herons. Looking east from the bridge, on the south bank of the Arno, there is the Terzo Giardino, which is a haven for warblers and finches of all kinds. We also saw nuthatches and treecreepers in the Boboli Gardens.
