Castello di Santa Severina

The Castle of Santa Severina is an imposing structure 10,000 square meters wide, which contains about a thousand years of history. Byzantines, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese together with several important families, among all the dynasty of Andrea Carafa, had a fundamental role in the construction and in the different building stratification that characterizes the Castle. significant changes are due to the Sculco and, above all, to the Grutther who, having lost the need for defense, transformed the keep of the fortress into a noble residence by furnishing it with the precious decorations of Francesco Jordano. In the castle, in addition to the temporary exhibitions that are constantly being set up there, there is the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of weapons and armor, the exhibition of the historical Costume and an exhibition on medieval torture. Inside the Castle there is also the municipal Enoteca Valle del Neto with several important companies in our area.

We visited the castle in the late afternoon which is a great time to go because you get the cool breeze and the sunset. €4 per adult seemed like good value for money. Signs in multiple languages. We wandered around for about an hour enjoying the views and learning about the history.

National Archaeological Museum of Crotone

Located in the historic city center and a few steps from the medieval castle of Charles V, it has two floors: on the first floor are exhibited in chronological order (from prehistoric times up to Roman times) the findings concerning the ancient city of Kroton; while on the second floor are exposed, besides the findings concerning the "neighboring" cities (Krimisa and Kaulon mainly), also the askos stolen in Strongoli and finished at the Paul Getty Museum in Malibù in 1992 and returned to Crotone in 2007. Also in the second floor an entire room is dedicated to the "treasure of Hera", a series of votive artifacts including Diadema of Hera: a gold foil decorated on the outside with a set of leaves (maybe myrtle) and berries interlaced between them.
