The Fortuna River Waterfall is a natural area managed sustainably by Integral Development Association of La Fortuna (ADIFORT), a non-profit organization, having as its main objective to ensure the well-being and growth of La Fortuna community; projects that are possible to run thanks to funds raised by the visit of each tourist to this natural space. La Fortuna Waterfall is located in a biological reserve with an area of 210 acres of transition premontane tropical wet forest, part of the Arenal Volcano National Park and is located at 520 meters over the sea level, where there are sources of our mountains and the waters of La Fortuna River. To observe this splendid 70 meters high waterfall, visitors must pass a path of approximately 530 steps, which offers greater security to its passage and comfortable areas for rest and hydration through a forest with native trees of the area.

We recently visited and initially were dismayed by big signs at the entry point saying they were closed and it was dangerous to press ahead. Nether the less we pressed on and found a local landowner has opened a new path to compensate for the other route which was damaged during Hurricane Nate. It was a moderate hike in and out and the reward at the falls was worth every step. I would say that anyone is reasonable shape should be able to do it, even accounting for slippery rocks at the bottom for the last 100 yards to the falls.

This was one of my favorite things that I did while in Costa Rica. The views were breathtaking. It was very organized from one area to the next. The staff was so incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. The area before the waterfalls was surprisingly handicapped accessible (the ramps were steep, but nonetheless accessible). There were so many animals to see -- sloths, monkeys, birds, butterflies, hummingbirds, jaguars, other big cats, oxen, goats, frogs, snakes, etc. There is a huge beautiful butterfly garden, but if it is wet outside, the butterflies can't fly, so they are lying around as if they're dead; its kind of creepy. The frogs sleep during the day, so the staff find them in the morning, relocates them visible spots and hangs tags to show you where they are and what kind they are. The waterfalls were amazing. There were a LOT of stairs, but there are sturdy railings and it wasn't slippery, despite the rain. There's a nice gift shop with a lot of local coffees, chocolates, etc. There's a buffet down in the park and another restaurant at the top with an incredible view and a bar. All in all it was a wonderful morning. We spent about 3.5 hours total.
