A must see in the heart of São Miguel Island, inside of Furnas Valley, Terra Nostra Garden dates back to 1775, when American merchant Thomas Hickling fell in love with Furnas and decided to create the perfect relaxation haven which still seduces every visitor today. Aside from its large Camellia Collection (over 600 species, some of which unique in the World) and other rare species, the park surrounding Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is known worldwide for its Thermal Pool, filled with volcanic water from the hot springs at a steady 40°C (104°F), rich in iron and other minerals highly beneficial for the skin and creating complete and unparalleled relaxation.
I loved the Terra Nostra Parque, beautiful to see, amazing hot thermal baths and even some animals to watch; you can even feed the fish with special provided fish food. Top Place!

The drive into and out of Faial da Terra where this waterfall hike is located is a treat for your senses. We first had lunch in the town, then made our way to the parking lot at the beginning of the trail. Now this is a hike. It’s beautiful, and uphill most of the way to the waterfall. We were accompanied by several roosters and chickens along the trail. They’re surprisingly nice hiking companions! The waterfall was huge and worth hiking to. In summer, this is definitely a place you would reward yourself with a swim! On the hike down, take the detour towards Sanguinho. This is a formerly abandoned town that now has some people moving back in. It was so cool to see and the views of the valley are fantastic. The walk back down is on a winding, cobbled path. A very worthwhile detour! This was probably our favorite hike of our trip, and the most challenging one we did.

Poça da Dona Beija's ferruginous muds are indicated for cutaneous invigoration, and it's hot waters are therapeutic. All the pools have running water which ensures it's constant renewal. We receive tourists from all over the world looking for some time of relaxation and well-being. You can visit us anytime of the year. Our hot waters are revitalizing both in the Summer and Winter!
Pay at entrance, scan barcode to go through Barrier, go to shop- pay for locker with waterproof electric key and leave 20 euro deposit. Explored the five pools- with various waterfalls and overflows dropping into the red river- all slightly different and all 39oC Favourite spot was in the mystic pool where you could lay flat on the smooth black stone and have the hot water flow gently under you dropping into the river. Entrance into the river itself was shut when I visited. Great place to relieve aching muscles from hiking. Accommodation had given us dark towels for using at the spas- Worth having to ensure you don’t wreck white towels! Tip: if you do not pay for the shower in the changing rooms afterwards it is very cold, you have to go to the shop after you have finished in the spa to pay for it, and they wouldn't let us pay before so ended up having the cold shower as couldn’t be bothered to go back as it was late - in hindsight a hot shower would have been a nicer end to the visit! You need to keep hold of your ticket to leave through the barriers

The Furnas Monitoring and Research Centre (CMIF) was created with the purpose of disseminating the history and evolution of the Furnas Volcano and the intervention of the Landscape Laboratory in the protection and recovery of ecosystems in the protected landscape area. It won the "Premio Internazionale di Pietra Architetture 2011 - XII edizione" award and it was finalist of SECIL Prize in 2013. It was the cover of the Spanish publication "El Croquis" and prominent target in some architectural websites. In 2016, won the "Tour Operator of the Year for Sao Miguel" in the "Holiday & Tour Specialist Awards" category of the Luxury Guide Awards. CMIF functions as an observatory and integrated centre for knowledge dissemination, playing an important role in the translation of scientific information to a language able of captivating visitors.
We visited as part of a Road Scholar program, and had the advantage of a pre-arranged talk by a staff member. She had a great story to tell, using an interactive map to show how the center has promoted and educated the public about the ecosystem surrouding and including Furnas Lake. The environmental center, the lake and the nearby town are in the caldera, basically the center, of the Furnas Volcano. She explained how the water quality of beautiful Furnas Lake was restored by the purchase of nearby farmland to stop chemicals from reaching the water. There's also a wonderful but easy hike around the lake. A unique ecosystem, and definitely worth a visit,

This is something you just have to see, with the boiling water pits with steam coming out of the ground and all the mounds in a cordoned-off area where the local restaurants cook their meals underground... Whether you actually eat the food or not, it's very impressive and worth a visit.

From waterfalls to centenary trees, a magical and historical house in the middle of the property, breathtaking views to the Furnas Lake and hotsprings, Grená becomes one of the greatest natural parks of the Azores, now opened for everyone to visit and enjoy nature's best creation at it's purest state.
I have been one of the first Grena visitors indeed. when you arrive around the like you do not expect such a beauty just next door. Then you see volcanic springs steaming and bubbling and out of sudden red pathfinder heading directly to Grena natural park . You will discover pure nature full of waterfalls, small lakes , green beautiful plants. There is a lots of sceneries you basically want to stay for a while ... Just sit at one of many benches and simply breath ... You will feel beauty of Grena by each second you will be there . Like another universe .. Definitely one of “ must visit places” on Azores. Highly recommend if you need to relax and recharge your batteries ????????

While in Furnas my wife and I walked around the Lake Furnas. There is a beautiful church on the hike around the lake. It the Chapel of Our Lady of Victories. What a beautiful sight this church was with all of the lush foliage around it. We did not go in, but you could pay 5 euro and walk through a botanical trail that allows you access inside the chapel. It was a beautiful break for our hike and an opportunity to think about all who had worshiped in this chapel in years past.
