Opened in 1998, the Oceanário was the centerpiece of the XXth Century's last World Fair, themed "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future", and eternally binds Lisbon to the Oceans.MissionThe Oceanário’s mission is to promote knowledge of the oceans and bring up the public about the duty of protecting natural heritage, through changing their daily habits. While walking through impressive and unforgettable exhibits, visitors are encouraged to learn fascinating things about the oceans and, more importantly, how to make decisions in their daily lives that actively promote the conservation of nature.
Although tickets are a bit pricey compared to other attractions, the Oceanário justly deserves a visit. Besides its striking contemporary architecture, the contents are also outstanding. The day I went, there was an original and amazing temporary exhibition on undersea forests by a Japanese artist, accompanied by beautiful music from the talented Portuguese composer Rodrigo Leão. Beautiful for your eyes and ears. The permanent exhibition is also impressive and complete. It attracts with its twilight atmosphere every kind of visitor and leaves you with the impression of having had a glimpse of a misterious and riveting world, utterly apart from our daily lives. The Oceanário has a very varied public, but it seems to be focused on families. That implies children, especially if you go there on weekends, but most of them were well behaved, not bothering your visit at all. There are a bunch of other activities run by the organisation, but even if you opt for a single free visit, you´ll notice that this place has the positive trait that you can feel free here to visit the place at your pace. You can go around some sections rapidly if you want, or linger for a while in others and then come back again. It allows a very free vision of the place, it doesn´t give the impression as if there were a prefixed itinerary that you´d have to follow always.

LISBON ZOO – GO AROUND THE WORLD IN JUST ONE DAY At Lisbon Zoo, we invite you to travel around the world without leaving Lisbon. Find the Sumatran Tigers in the dense vegetation of the Rainforest, observe Lions, Giraffes and Elephants behaviour at the dry African Savannah and dazzle with the majestic flight of the colourful birds of South America. Our mission is to develop and promote a zoological and botanical park, as a centre of conservation, reproduction and reintroduction of endangered species, through scientific investigation and environmental enrichment programs. Along with education is a strong entertainment component that will ensure a great family time, always with the conviction that when visiting Lisbon Zoo you’re contributing to this great project of conservations of endangered species and their habitats.
Fantastic zoo, reasonable entrance fee, loads of animals to see, cable car trip around the zoo is great and the dolphin show is unmissable

Quinta das Palmeiras is a botanical mini -zoo and mini - garden, which offers its visitors some bird species and a variety of lush plants in a covered area of 5380 m2 . This Thursday generates a sudden patch of green in a dry area west of the airport , and results from Carlos Afonso vision. The oasis that it results is a refuge for many plants and many birds who live in freedom
We arrived here just before opening, but the owner let us in early ,warned us that the parrots would bite our wristbands off ( yes we should have taken more notice of that !) and even gave us some fish food to hand feed the carp . The two parrots on stands are a bit nippy , so i wouldn't advise letting children hold them , but they are adorable . Many of the birds are free flying , and go in and out of their cages as they wish, or wander freely like the peacocks, peahens and their chicks. We spent just over an hour looking round , the 3 euro entry is a bargain to be honest . If you are enchanted by the porto santo lizards , you will also find them in droves here. Get a good taxi driver and he will give you his card so you can phone him when you want to be picked up if you would rather do this trip independently. Just under 10 euros each way from the Pestana Hotel.

Take a walk on the wild side and visit the biggest and greenest zoo in Porto. There are more than 600 animals and 200 different species, all living in spacious and green habitats.
A hidden gem that is not well signposted, but trust in Google Maps and you will be fine. We went in early February, Winter hours mean it is closed on Mondays, so beware. We were blessed with a sunny day albeit windy. Us, son and his fiancée and their 20 month old daughter. Concessions in theory are for over 65s, but being Portugal grey hair was enough. They were buying season tickets as the zoo is but a 20 minute drive for them and as twos and under are free they intend to make full use of the zoo as a regular place to go. Attractions such as penguin feeding, lion feeding etc start as soon as the zoo opens. The zoo is very much like Chester in the UK being very rare breed and conservation centric, though the site is a bit smaller than Chester. The way the enclosures are designed you get very much up close and personal to the animals. Beware of some of the monkeys as they have a habit of relieving themselves through the bars and if you are under it you will smell the rest of the day. On a peak season day the two car parks would be under pressure. It is downhill to the ticket office so, of course, it is uphill back to the car. Catering is by means of numerous cabins and vans around the whole site and a central restaurant. Low season only the restaurant was open. Well priced, but with what may be seen by some as limited choices. Animals can be adopted and your name appears on the side of the enclosure. The emphasis is on communication of issues surrounding the animals in the wild. With everything that is available by way of attractions and exhibitions the zoo caters for all ages from toddlers through to adults. In sum a great day out for all the family and well worth the 15€ admission.

Biological Park of Lousã Mountains has been a benchmark as an example of good practice within the social entrepreneurship. The natural environment is a protected environment, naturally integrating that, on one hand, aims the conservation of species / indigenous breeds; on the other, the social commitment to cohesion by creating employment / occupational activities for people suffering exclusion, long-term unemployed, people with disabilities and / or chronic illness, integrating them into everyday work in the park, promoting equality and human dignity, promoting biophilia and passion for nature. Besides the zoo, Foundation ADFP (the Park´s owner) has built a restaurant, which promotes the traditional food of our region; an Eco-museum with old mills, irrigations systems and bread making machines; wine museum; cheese and pudding factory to promote women´s jobs and traditional products; a 4 star hotel integrated in nature; “Space of Mind” a museum which guides the tourist from the firsts
We saw a poster advertising this show at the Bio Park of a Sunday and visited. There is a stable and show grounds there. There were several vans & horse trailers in attendance with their students and horses for the show. There is also a park with walking trails and animals dotted along the path. We did not take the walking tour but will in a couple of weeks. Of interest are shops that teach weaving, pottery making, something else and a small restaurant. Further up the hill is a new hotel of which we will stay shortly. We very much enjoyed ourselves and the kind Portuguese gave us some folding chairs to watch the hunter competition. These are pictures of the posters but not the grounds.

One hour away from Lisbon, in Lavre, district of EVORA, a Biodiversity Reserve, a project of Environmental Education and a Leisure Park! In the beautiful ALENTEJO and committed to animal welfare and environment it provides a unique leisure time in close contact with Nature, by foot and tractor. Jumping on the giant trampoline and resting in the shade of a cork tree are proposals for all ages!
In challenging COVID times, it was wonderful to discover a park where you can feel the passion and dedication the team puts into it. A great afternoon with a lot of fun activities for the kids and animals to discover.
