Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area

This island treasure; it has 39 miles of pristine shoreline.

We have packed in and camped on the beach for several days, bringing tarps, rope, frozen water, lots of food, etc. Then using driftwood and rope would create leantos to stretch the tarps for lots of shade. Swimming at night we would encounter phosphorescent algae. Always lots of beautiful shells, and not many people. If you can handle roughing it, it is magical.

Very disappointed to hear about the ferry and lack of island shuttle now. This will make this camp practically inaccessible.

Kind of run down, but lots of fun. Fresh bait, inexpensive camping, and lots of small trout. If you like catch and release, this fishing location provides lots of Speckled Trout Action. The trout are mostly "Schoolies" around 12-14 inches, so they are not legal to keep. A diligent fisherman can catch 50-100 per night of fishing under lights with two or three keepers in the mix. Try the large "Killer Shad Rig" that they sell in the bait shop and you will catch fish until the rig is mangled. The food is O.K. from the restaurant, but the flies are plentiful, aggressive and annoying on the open air porch. Live local bands on Friday and Saturday nights ad a nice vibe to the place. Fishing permit is 5.00, boat launch is 5.00. Weekly RV Site is a reasonable $100.00 ...electric and water only. Nothing fancy, but fun for the family and friends that want to have a beer and catch fish.

Kayaking was a new experience for me although I am familiar with canoeing. Alan took us out to a bay and I had a wonderful time! I would definitely recommend this and will do it again.

We took our kids 10 and 7 with us and they had a blast. Boat was very nice, clean, and roomy. We could be out fishing it up or retreat to the nice cool cabin. We always had a pole on hand, never touched a hook or bait, first mate worked his butt off and had a great attitude, kept it light and fun. Captain kept us on the fish! We caught so many our arms feel like jello. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend. Great for couples, families, parties, business adventures, team building, and anyone who likes adventure.

This is at the end of the main road through the town and is a clean swath of shore, with a covered pavilion and some parking spaces. Very clean. It looks like an outdoors city park for community events, but not particularly spectacular nor attractive.
