What to do and see in Pompeii, Campania: The Best Tours

May 30, 2021 Etsuko Causey

Pompeii is a Roman town frozen in time, thanks to a devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Explore houses from modest to majestic; see Roman shops, baths and brothels; or apply your high-school Latin to the graffiti that's still visible on some of the walls. End your visit at the Villa of the Mysteries, and try to interpret its amazing, bizarre frescoes—scholars have debated their meaning for years.

We had an amazing time horse riding around the vineyards of Vesuvius and trying the local wine. Giuseppe was extremely friendly and helpful and the horse riding was such a lovely experience. He had a lot of knowledge to share with us about the area and the local produce and culture. The horses were lovely and we felt very comfortable with them though we hadn’t ridden horses in a long time. The wine tasting was also great. The location is spectacular, the wines delicious and they gave us a generous amount of food. We thought the experience was really great value for money and would highly recommend it!

Davide was an excellent tour guide for my group of friends on an early Saturday morning. It was obvious that he loved his job and it showed through the history he walked us through during the entire tour. I would highly recommend any tour with Davide and if the Vatican is on your bucket list, then early morning access is the tour you want. Happy travels!

Although our tour was a while ago, recent events underscore the importance of a guide in making a lasting memory. Fabrizio Belleni provided us a most wonderful day of history and culture as we efficiently toured Pompeii and were introduced to the Amalfi Coast. His knowledge and driving skill were matched by a desire to understand our interests and guide us to a wonderful mix of sights, and even a relaxed afternoon coffee by the sea. Recently, as the pandemic raised concerns for people we know around the world, we thought of Fabrizio and checked to see how he was doing. This reminded us of how important he was (and continues to be) – to our family’s memory of one great day! Fabrizio is missing in this photo, because he took the picture.

Ilaria is a wonderful host and this most enjoyable 1h-tour of Pompeji was very entertaining and fun! I particularly liked the illuminating small stories included in her interesting and informative presentation. Ilaria works as an archaeology teacher and used to be a professional licensed guide in Pompeji before the site was closed because of the pandemic. I enjoyed her enthusiastic and humorous presentation very much, her passion for Pompeji was contagious and her talk (as well as her English) was really excellent. Ilaria brings a lifetime of experience and love for Pompeii, and she presented great slides and videos. I also liked how she answered all questions after the tour; she is really an expert with a deep knowledge of ancient (and current) Italy. I loved it and I learned a lot. I will recommend Ilaria’s tour to other friends and family members. It would be great if TakeWalks.com would also offer her talks about Herculaneum and the Archaelogy Museum of Naples (where many of the items from Pompeji are on display). I would take any tour she gives!
