On the shores of Moraca, there is a monument erected to honour the famous Russian poet, theatre and film actor and writer Vladimir Visotsky, who resided in Podgorica while working on a film for the erstwhile Titograd TV station. He expressed his love for Montenegro in his poem ''For the Montenegrins'', and this is his only monument outside the borders of the former Soviet Union.

Three kilometres away from Podgorica, in a valley at the confluence of the rivers Moraca and Zeta, the ruins of the ancient town of Duklja are located. Duklja is first mentioned by Ptolemy, general in the army of Alexander the Great, in the 2nd century BC. Today this place is one of the most valuable testimonies of presence of the Roman Empire in Montenegro.
I just spent three weeks living and working at Duklja, the most significant archaeological site in Montenegro. Whether you are interested in Roman history or archaeology, Duklja will remind you not of the importance that this site played as a provincial capital, but also that even today we are connected to a greater heritage. Some may call it "rubble" but what you see at Duklja is only a fraction of the city. Excavations are slow going due to limited funding. If you plan to wander Duklja as a tourist, please respect the space by not littering or climbing on the walls. Leave any excavations in tact, and take a moment to reflect on the incredible heritage of Montenegro.
