Set on a high bank overlooking the fertile flats of the Murray River, Old Blythewood stands as a testament to the industry, ingenuity and flexibility of the pioneering McLarty family. John and Mary Anne McLarty were amongst the first Europeans to settle in the Murray District around 1842. John was a tenant farmer and Mary Anne the local postmistress.

Peel Zoo is a privately funded zoo and wildlife sanctuary. Our goal is to be the best boutique zoo in Australia. We strive to achieve this by making sure everyone who visits us has a unique and personal experience. Visiting Peel Zoo is a bit like visiting one of your own family, who just happens to have hundreds of pets. Breeding animals is a key concern for us. And, in that regard, our Tasmanian Devil breeding program is of vital importance. This species is endangered in the wild because of an in incurable facial tumour disease. We hope our efforts contribute to the long term future of the Tasmanian Devil.
We visited in September 2019 and had a great afternoon. Loved the friendly atmosphere and that every animal had a name so you could greet them as you wandered around. The walk through aviary was great and we got some great photos with the birds. I've been to many zoos, in a number of countries, and this place is definitely worth a visit!

Loved the whole place. Old Church with settlers cemetary, old buildings, great local craft on sale, lovely coffee shop, beautiful quilt making, the museum, the roses with perfumes from the days of "real" roses and the river nearby. An enjoyable couple of hours.
