Paolo was a most gracious captain and host! We were 2 couples, that only had one day in the valley, and we felt spending it with Paolo gave us a taste of all there is to do in the area. It was too chilly to swim, but we did enjoy a couple hours on the boat. He told us about the wineries, the port industry and the history of the valley. Afterwards we drove to his family's vineyard which had spectacular views of the river and valley. We walked through the vines and he gave us a tour of their production area. Then he prepared a nice lunch for us and we sampled the wines they produced. We felt like we were leaving a good friend at the end of our day. If you're short on time and want something that checks all the boxes, this is a fun way to do it. If you have more time, it would be a great way to familiarize yourself with the area and get an insiders view about where to visit or do tastings. Highly enjoyable day with a very sweet man and his dog!

RESERVATION REQUIRED. One of the Douro's most renowned estates, Quinta do Bomfim is now open to the public for tours (in several languages), tastings and vineyard walks.
Having done many such winery tours, admittedly in places other than Portugal, we know what the game is and this one barely even started. Very nice museum quality presentation of history, with photos and artifacts. But the tour covered only the crushing vats and aging casks. Those were pretty remarkable but they completely skipped everything about the grapes, fermentation, bottling, quality control processes and, what we learned a few days later, the extraordinary journey of the wine down the Douro River (both historical and modern day).
Moreover, they were more interested in the owning family's genetic heritage than even anything basic about port, the wine for which the region, and presumably they, are famous.
After, the tasting consisted solely of three bottles. One, a white which we do not like and never drink, was already poured. The other two were red table wines. There was no port offered ... here in Port Country.

I visited in early September I figured it's the beginning of low season, we have around 15people on boat so it's not crowded. No interaction or explanation provided, you get a audio headset on-and-off explaining the name of the wine maker, the river, the hotel along Douro. Not that helpful information.
What you can do since you are on the boat? Enjoy the magnificent scenery that u can't get anywhere else in the world!
If I would do it again, I would choose 1 hour trip.

Pinhao Railways Station is not large but the tiled picturesl decorations were pretty. The whole atmosphere at the station remind visitors of the "cow boy" age. A "must see" site when you travel to Pinhao. Highly believe that the train ride in Duoro Valley will be equally scenic as well.

Wine & Tours Exclusive guide in Douro valley
At very short notice Jorge organised a boat trip for us on the Duoro. It was excellent and lots of fun. Our guide Ricardo was very informative and provided us with nonstop commentary in excellent english. Could not recommend this trip more highly. Because our time was limited in this area Jorge also very generously gave us advice on local sites of interest that we could get to with our car or by walking. Another example of the hospitality and friendliness we have received many times from the Portuguese people we have encountered on this trip.

This was our last stop during our day in the Douro Valley, and it was the best! We entered the tasting room and inquired about tickets to visit the vineyard. The manager explained that there just happened to be a tour leaving shortly. The price was (as of August 2017) about 12,50€. This included the tour and two samples of their port. The tour itself was on an open air bus that took us all the way to the top of the Quinta, about 350 meters above the Douro river. Our guides let us exit the bus and walk through the rows of vines for pictures while explaining the history of company, the land and the region. The tour took about 1 hour, and when we returned to the tasting room we were greeted with our tastings and made some purchases to bring home. We really enjoyed our time there!!

We took the two-hour cruise from Pinhao to Tua and back. It provided the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful Douro River valley without worry about driving. We shared our morning cruise with four other guests, leaving lots of room to move around the boat.

Quinta do Panascal dates back to the 18th century and is the most important estate of the prestigious Port Wine Company “Fonseca Guimaraens”. The estate has been classified as Grade A, which is the highest grade given to a quinta. The same occurs with its famous wines, namely Fonseca Vintage 1994 which was recognized by the Wine Spectator Magazine as one of the best wines in the world.Situated in the Douro Valley Region (a World Heritage site), Quinta do Panascal is open to everyone wishing to visit one of the most famous quintas in the region.
This winery produces the Fonseca brand of port. We loved being given some audiophones (with narrative in English, among others), and sent on our way alone to walk at our pace though their picturesque vineyards. The views were beautiful. Afterwards we were given three samples of their port. I don't know if they usually charge, but on this day, they did not. That compares with other vineyards in the neighborhood that give tours for twenty euros or so.

This quinta (owned by Croft) is in an absolutely beautiful setting. We were taken on a guided tour by a well-informed estate worker, and then returned to the house for a tasting of white port with tonic water (and lemon and mint). The tour was included in our Viking River Cruise, so I don't know what it cost.
