The Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial stands as an important symbol of remembrance and a lasting tribute to all Newfoundlanders who served during the First World War. At the heart of the memorial stands a great bronze caribou (the emblem of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment). Its defiant gaze forever fixed towards its former foe, the caribou stands watch over rolling fields that still lay claim to many men with no known final resting place.
The Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial is a large area commemorating the fallen soldiers of a Canadian force and Canadian soldiers in general, who died during World War I. There several cemeteries and memorials in this area. This particular memorial features the caribou, made in bronze, which was the emblem of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.

In this interesting and eclectic shop tucked away in a fascinating historical French town, the owner was fixing up the basement of his store over a period of several years. He made some fascinating discoveries and he tells you the story during the tour. He speaks simply and slowly and if you have a basic knowledge of French you can follow him - if not there are almost always bilingual tourists with you who translate as he speaks. If you want an unusual and long to be remembered experience, stop by Le Cachot!

I walked around the ruins briefly whilst in Soissons on business. It was 9am on a chilly January morning, and I was the only tourist on the site but the informative plaques were helpful. I would return in season in order to visit the full site.

Welcome to Henri Matisse's family house! Discover the childhood of the famous painter through the memories and pictures gathered in the museum that used to be the family's seed-shop. The antique machinery dates back to the 19th century, and all the furniture in the bedroom and the workshop belonged to the painter. After your visit, enjoy a hot or cold beverage and a typical snack in the "Cafe Couleurs", and don't forget to buy a souvenir in our shop! You can also tour the city with an audioguide, following Matisse's footsteps.

Very interesting experience of utopia. Well organized. I could allow only 2 hours. If you get into it, it is worth more. Cafeteria looks rather basic, but anyway everybody shows warm welcome.

A well preserved mine crater from the first world war. A boardwalk allows you to walk around, information panels tell the story. Follow signs 'La grand mine' from La Boisselle. On road parking just before crater. Sat-navs may direct you down tracks, take care.
We visited this site with Jon from Old Blighty Tours. It is sobering and terrifying to see. I recommend visiting with a guide who can explain in detail what you are seeing, and how it fit into the World War I Somme battlefields. I hope more visitors visit and remember the terror that was WWI, and how it was a prelude to WWII.
