A concentration of high-quality wineries north of San Francisco.
We drove from Santa Rosa to Philo... Amazing scenery and a tremendous twisting drive. There are many wonderful wineries and quaint towns along the route... do yourself a favor and sample some amazing pinots.

Handley Cellars is a small family-owned winery in California’s Mendocino County. Bonded in 1982, we produce around 12,000 cases of wine a year. Our quality starts with our Estate Vineyards in Anderson Valley. We are located at the northwest end of the Anderson Valley on 59 acres of the original Holmes Ranch. Still standing on the property are the now-refurbished ranch house, barn, and the original water tower. At Handley Cellars, we offer a wide variety of wines that complement today’s diverse cuisines. Winemaker Randy Schock seeks to make balanced wines that possess distinctive varietal characteristics, wines that reflect the soil and climate in which they were grown. Handley’s beautiful tasting room is located 6 miles northwest of Philo, California, on Highway 128. We offer tours by appointment, and our garden courtyard is open for picnics. Stop by to try our selections and, while visiting, enjoy our unique display of folk art collected from around the world.
Chris was a wonderful host and we throughly enjoyed the wine tasting at this boutique winery. He is very knowledgable about wine making and the local region. Every tasting was delicious and we didn't try a wine that we did not like! The special Pinot Noir that is a signature for Handley Cellars was the best. We joined the Wine Club and can't wait to get our first shipment.

A Sense of Place. Terroir driven Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurztraminer from Anderson Valley and Comptche in Mendocino County. Reservations for 6 or more are recommended for the best possible experience.
In a historic building, used for decades on an apple orchard, Phillips Hill has done a fabulous job preserving the essence of the building while carving out a beautiful wine tasting area. The charm of the old building is a perfect backdrop for the charm of their Pinots. Our trip through their wines was narrated by Natacha, the delightful wife of the wine maker. Top Notch Wines!

The saying goes that "service sells' and the people at Greenwood Vineyards exemplify what great service really is. Our host was very friendly, and she found and served us the types of wines that we liked to drink not what they wanted to try and sell us like other wineries. Our tasting was in a lovely setting in their garden, we were never rushed and we able to take our time to enjoy both the wines and the surroundings. Being "fruit forward" Pinot Noir lovers, they found numerous wines for us to try that we enjoyed and purchased.

We enjoyed wine tastings and always purchased at least one bottle of wine to take back to the hotel and enjoy the next day with a snack or picnic lunch. Our objective was to explore the wineries and support them at the same time. Most wineries deduct your tasting fee from the cost of the bottle or better yet do not charge from the outset if you specify you are going to buy wine. This winery has a nice wine tasting experience!

Founded in 1982, Roederer Estate winery is nestled in Mendocino County’s cool, fog-shrouded Anderson Valley. As the California outpost of Champagne Louis Roederer, Roederer Estate winery builds upon a centuries-old tradition of fine winemaking. Roederer Estate’s sparkling wines are produced using only Estate-grown grapes from the winery’s own vineyards. Carrying on the tradition of Champagne Louis Roederer in France, special oak-aged reserve wines are added to each blend. The multi-vintage Roederer Estate Anderson Valley Brut debuted in 1988 to great acclaim, followed by the Roederer Brut Rosé and Roederer Estate’s tête de cuvée, L’Ermitage.
Great outdoor patio and delicious sparkling wines. You need to make a reservation and spots go fast, so don't wait. We had a wonderful sparkling tasting and learned a lot about the process at the same time. It was especially interesting to taste the difference in the Magnum vs the regular-size bottle. Pretty reasonable prices for the quality and for the area.

With an enticing view of vineyards and Redwood trees, Goldeneye Winery is a beautiful location to sample and savor some of Anderson Valley's most represented Pinot Noir wines. Our Visitor's Center features picnic facilities and an open-space area offering seated wine tasting experiences daily, both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting).
Our host was Monica and she is very knowledgeable and friendly. She had a table reserved and ready for (4) of us outside but since it was a little chilly we ended up in the tasting room. We started with a sparking rose and went right into their pinots which are delicious. We stayed for a couple hours talking and relaxing and Monica checked in periodically and we never felt rushed. Highly recommend Goldeneye. It is a must stop for us every time we head up/down the coast.
