Perched on the banks of the wide Swan River, between the Indian Ocean and the sands of the Nullarbor Desert, Perth is one of the world's most isolated cities, yet still boasts an active beach scene and smokin’ nightlife. Family-friendly Cottesloe is brimming with swimmers, surfers and snorkelers. Head north to Scarborough for a spirited beachside club scene. Coo at cute marsupials on ferry-accessible Rottnest Island, and don’t miss the views from King's Park and Botanic Gardens.

The Somerville Auditorium is a cinema formed by pines. It is a theatre for the Festival of Perth. Films that might not atherwise be shown in WA could be viewed here.. The Somerville Auditorium is on the campus of the University of Western Australia (UWA) at Crawley. In the old days, before widespread air conditioning, the Somerville Auditorium was a blessed relief from Perth's hot summer nights. The Festival of Perth, for better of worse, has remained a local event. It's a pity that more people can't experience this "cinema of pines."

We went to see a Perth Glory Big Bash cricket match and it was a lot of fun. The stadium facilities were really good, as were the fireworks. There was a lovely family vibe too. It did get cold after the sun had set, so taking a jacket or jumper is advisable (even in the summer time).

As Perth’s only rectangular stadium, the venue serves as the competition base for the high performance sporting codes of Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer. Following a $95 million redevelopment, it is now a world class rectangular stadium capable of hosting high quality, large attendance sporting and entertainment events.
Certain sports are popular in Western Australia and others are not so popular. The Wildcats are popular, as are the Eagles and Dockers. HBF Park caters for 'rectangular' sports, such as soccer, rugby union and rugby league, that on occasion can draw a big crowd for a big game. It's a good venue for performers, such as English balladeer Ed Sheeran. By the way, HBF stands for Hospital Benefit Fund, a not-for-profit health fund that dominates the health insurance industry in WA.
