Wharton Esherick Museum

Please note: ALL VISITORS MUST HAVE ADVANCE RESERVATIONS. Wharton Esherick was a sculptor who worked primarily in wood, readily extending his unique forms to furniture, furnishings, utensils, interiors, buildings, and more. His motto, "if it isn't fun, it isn't worth doing," is evident in the joyful expression of his work, inviting the eye and the hand. A National Historic Landmark for Architecture, his hilltop studio/residence, with more than 300 of his works on exhibition, has been preserved much as it was when the artist lived and worked there. The Museum is open to the public through guided tours for which reservations are required.

What a treat to tour the artist Wharton Esherick’s unique studio/home, where the building is as fascinating as the furniture and sculptures that it contains. Over a 40-year period, Esherick hand-crafted his home, designing and constructing everything from the carved cabinets to the puzzle-like floorboards to the amazing spiral staircase. Everything is smoothly shaped of polished wood, so lovingly finished that your fingers itch to touch - and here you can! Esherick’s furniture designs are organic and whimsical, but surprisingly practical, too, like the self-illuminating desk masquerading as a cupboard, or the hidden drawers built into a velvet settee. A knowledgeable docent led our hour-long tour (reserve online, $15 adults; $13 seniors) and guided us through the surprises and secrets of the house. As a bonus, the road we took to the Esherick Museum took us past several of the sites in the Valley Forge National Historical Park.

My husband and I have appreciated Frazetta's stunning art for many years and we were thrilled and excited to find a museum only a few miles away from our new home. Our visit there was not only inspiring but his daughter, Lori, took the time to give us a wonderful tour and history of many of his magnificent, original pieces. A must for Frazetta fans!

Michener Art Museum

The Michener Art Museum is an American art institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting the art and cultural heritage of the Delaware Valley region and beyond. Welcoming 135,000 visitors each year, the Michener showcases a spectacular collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings as well as many special and permanent exhibitions that include the work of historical and contemporary painters, sculptors, photographers, and furniture designers. Art transforms—we’ll show you how.

The Michener Art Museum offers every one the chance to experience the world of art up close by viewing wonderful paintings and sculptures displayed in various exhibits throughout the year. My wife and I visited the museum on a recent rainy day and were amazed how beautiful it really is, and as a Submarine Veteran w/ID I was especially grateful to be informed there would be no entrance fee for both of us. This art museum may not be the largest we’ve seen but it was definitely worth the hour and a half drive to get here and we highly recommend checking it out.

With over 140 bronzes, marbles, and plasters - including "The Thinker" - the distinguished collection housed in the Rodin Museum represents every phase of Auguste Rodin’s career. Located on Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the elegant Beaux-Arts–style building and garden offer an absorbing experience and the largest collection of Rodin's work outside of Paris.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

A dazzling museum, as much for its interior design as for its collection.

Historic art gallery and school steps away from convention center. We were fortunate to see the exhibit ‘FROM THE SCHUYLKILL TO THE HUDSON: LANDSCAPES OF THE EARLY AMERICAN REPUBLIC which chronicled influence of Philadelphia art on Hudson school. The permanent collection features mostly American art from 18th- and 19th century and housed in the beautiful Frank Furness’s Historic Landmark Building which combines a range of architectural details with Moorish, Victorian, and Gothic features. One of our favorite exhibits were once that featured art work from recent and past students and faculty of the school. Perfect sized museum for kids as you can spend 2-3 hours and see majority of exhibits. Also, children under 12 can view museum for free.
