Originally a Moorish settlement, developed by the Knights Templar, home to Pope Benedict XIII, the castle has a lot of history and spectacular views of the ocean. Charming narrow, maze-like streets with a lot of souvenir shops and plenty of restaurants to sit down and enjoy local food. The entrance is 5€ - a bargain for the experience.

By writing this review I probably put at risk what is one of the last stretches of unspoilt coastline in southern Spain. If you are prepared to walk then you can take in a wonderful stretch of coastline largely free from half finished villas and derelict building sites. Beware of mountain bikers on the steeper sections of pathways. The Natural Park is both peaceful and easily accessible, especially from Peñiscola. Walkers of all abilities can take advantage of the main paths, but take a picnic lunch as there are no places to buy food and drink. It is possible to drive along the coastal road if you are careful, it is mostly unsurfaced and a bit rough in places. Torre Badum is a good place to stop, as is the small car park a few Km south of the tower at Pebret. We were there in February and had the place mostly to ourselves

After a week of travels a visit to Peniscola was a relaxed distraction enjoying a walk on the beach, to view the ancient castle - beautiful beaches and a nice quiet time..perhaps early in the day was a good time to visit.

This beach is absolutely beautiful. The white sands are clearly swept mechanically daily as the sand looks pristine every day as if it had not been trod upon the day before. The water is beautiful and there is good depth to the beach. Adjacent to the beach is a walkway where there are benches and shade for one to sit. Restaurants and stores also line the perimeter of the beach, and there are wonderful views toward the castle above the beach. This is a not to be missed attraction in Peniscola.

You need to get inside those castle walls and explore the cobbled streets, packed with history. The Old Town rises 64 meters above sea level and you can find may places / shops, or restaurants that have great views of the Mediterranean.
