Levant Mine and Beam Engine

Opened in 1820 and closed in 1930, Levant is one of Cornwall's most famous coastal mines where a good part of the mining operations took place far beneath the seabed.

I think I have to say that this visit was one of my favourite days of our holiday. We've been to a couple of mines in Cornwall but this one by far had the most to look at, read and learn about. The guys that work here are so knowledgeable and great fun to chat with, the sheer amount that there is to look at is incredible and for me I think the dry room etc was my favourite bit, it's so evocative as it's literally been left exactly as it was the day the mine sadly shut. All their clothes and towels and personal bits were left hanging up and it actually made me feel quite sad that they'd lost what they had. There is so much to see that we split it with a visit to the lovely cafe which has the most amazing views over the sea from full length windows and the food was amazing. Their baguettes are delicious. We then went and wandered the rest of the site and visited the mine. For me the mine was great fun if a little scary but I had expected it to be bigger as Poldark had been. I still loved it and would come back with my other two girls as they missed this trip but the whole family really enjoyed it and it's well worth the money.

Pendeen Lighthouse

To stay actually in an old lighthouse keepers cottage within the enclosure of the lighthouse is just fabulous. The views are uninterrupted (obviously) and your either subjected to terrific sunsets or wonderful storm conditions on the rugged headland. The cottage is superbly presented and equipped you could ask for nothing more and for a quiet relaxing hideaway nowhere better.

Levant, Botallack and the Crowns Trail

An easy walk on the South West Coast Path through a patchwork landscape of tiny fields bounded by ancient stone walls and dotted with iconic mine chimneys and engine houses such as the Botallack Count House and the world-famous Levant Beam Engine.

Reviewed By TravellingTonyG - Milton Keynes, United Kingdom

The tin mine workings here are evocative of a different time and well worth visiting. It’s hard to imagine a more dramatic setting for Cornish Engine Houses and they will be familiar to any Poldark fan.

Portheras Cove

Reviewed By tremellen - Pendeen, United Kingdom

Beautiful beach all year round Cornwall at its best a true hidden gem, no need to close your eyes and think of faraway places as you toes sink in the soft warm golden sands and look out on the clear turquoise sea. However please don't let its beauty fool you as with all beaches lifeguards or not(none lifeguards here) the sea demands a lot of respect as inviting as it is please watch for under currents and the sea can be mighty here even on a calm day. A little walk to get too and very remote and can be a challenge to navigate over the rocks to get to the sand. Would not recommend for anyone with mobility problems and careful eye on children. Also hidden in the sand especially at sea could be shards of metal from a old shipwreck that was blown up years ago. Also weever fish with a sting in its back fin that barrow in the sand. The sea can hold many secrets not just here but most of Cornwall. Seals visit often so please keep dogs on leads when they do and watch for Portuguese man o' War very dangerous sea creatures with a sting in its tentacles that sometimes resemble a blown up balloon or clear plastic bag and similar to a jellyfish. Don't sit to close to the cliffs as rocks do fall. With all that said please enjoy were proud of our little cove and hope you make fond memories and come to love it as much as us locals do. And above everything else please take home everything you bring with you. If u carried it there then carry it back, leave nothing but footprints.
