Named for a local swamp fish, Paraty sits on Brazil's southeastern coast, 125 miles south of Rio, with the Bocaino Mountains at its back. The small colonial town's center is a national historic monument with well-preserved buildings on its pedestrian-only streets. Take a boat trip out into the bay to the flotillas of islands and coves nearby. Explore sugarcane plantations and hike or take a train through Atlantica Forest. Keep an eye out for the monkeys that roam the cobblestone streets.

Small island, about 5 minutes boat riding from São Gonçalo beach, which is about 20 minutes car riding from Paraty-RJ. Beautiful and quiet, with calm and transparent waters. Also has some food/drinks places owned by locals, like “Bar da Dita”, where we had good seafood for an honest price. Main shore has a small trail that leads to the back of the island, where we stayed entirely alone for hours, with the place only for ourselves. Small boat owners go back and forth from São Gonçalo to the island for a fair price (25 R$, round trip). We rode with Mr. Pipi, friendly old man who actually lives in the island. Great hidden treasure to visit while nearby Paraty!
