La Santisima Trinidad De Parana

A hilltop site of a Jesuit mission.

Reviewed By Nastame - Harrogate, United Kingdom

These ruins are a reminder of the damage that is done by colonialism to another nation's culture, in this case by the C18th Spanish. Fortunately, the Paraguayans had the sense to expel the Jesuits before too much damage was done. The site is open, relaxed viewing, a nice museum and the remains of some lovely sandstone ruins with a nice touch of Moorish architecture in the arches. Interesting and enjoyable visit.

The tour to the Itaipu hydroelectric is spectacular! I've had the opportunity to visit incredible places, but the experience of the trip to Itaipu is completely different from everything I had ever seen in my life. To Know about the grandiosity of ITAIPU and the history behind there since the approval at time of the military regime until the construction in 1975, and what it represents to Brazilians and Paraguayans, is priceless! The Itaipu production capacity is 14,000 MW, and the hydroelectric supply approximately 18% of the country, It's made me impressive. The tour provides you the opportunity to know the factory and to have all the experience that brings you to the immensity of the construction. Using data during the tour you have a better comparision to understand what it's represents. Don't forget to visit the Ecomuseum as well, this experience will make the visit even more exciting.

Ruinas jesuiticas de Jesus de Tavarangue

Reviewed By termar - Hamilton, Canada

What the Jesuits sought to do was rather altruistic. There was no gold or silver in Paraguay, perhaps accounting for the willingness of Spain to give huge tracts of land to the Jesuits for their missions or reducciones to provide work for the natives and convert them to Christianity. Jesus de Tavarangue was never finished with the 1767 expulsion of the Jesuits. It moved around, settling here in 1760. The size of the church and the extent of the remains has made it a World Heritage Site. The principal building was of course the church, everything else reduced to a very low level. The church was built as a replica of St Ignatius of Loyoya in Italy, accounting for its size. From the mirador, Trinidad could be seen, a source of communication between the two Jesuit reductions.

Panteon Nacional de los Heroes

Memorial to Paraguay's war dead.

Reviewed By WJD_CO - Longmont, United States

This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Asuncion. A classic building that is in great condition unlike many of the buildings in the old downtown. Right on the park, it is a great addition to the city.
