What to do and see in Outer Banks, North Carolina Coast: The Best Visitor Centers

April 9, 2022 Marianna Hollaway

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a 100-mile stretch of barrier islands dotted with pristine beaches, quaint towns and historic sites. If you love swimming, kayaking, or surfing, be sure to visit the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. To really experience local culture, explore each coastal village and sample as much food as you can along the way. (Pro tip: Try the catch of the day.) If you’re looking for a history lesson, check out Roanoke Island or the Wright Brothers National Memorial. And of course, no day is complete without watching the sunset from Jockey’s Ridge.

The staff were excellent. They gave me a map of the OBX (Outer Banks) that showed by location recommended sites to see. This was so incredibly helpful. It helped me organize my trip and not miss opportunities.

Took a neighbor that hasn't been to the Outer Banks. Drove from Hickory, NC to Kitty Hawk and then to Hatteras and saw everything in-between. Then took a ferry to Ocracoke and saw everything there before we took the ferry back. We were very lucky because this was four days before the hurricane hit. There was alot of destruction.

This is a new and modern structure with interesting exhibits including a cockpit of a small plane where you sit and view a screen with short aerial tours of the refuges. Best of all is the information provided for successful visits. A ranger gave us the scoop on where to have the best chances to see wildlife and to find the roads.
