The Out Islands are synonymous with sport, from the depths of the Gulf Stream that yield big game fish to the coral reefs just off shore that are catnip to scuba divers. Sailing, kayaking and beach-combing add action to lazy days in the sun, while resident pink flamingos and rare Bahama parrots color local hikes.

We did a day trip to Spanish Wells and Russell Island and had a really nice time. While we didn't get lucky with the weather and the wind was blowing pretty hard taking away the beauty of the sands bars area in the northern part of SW, we got a bit luckier at the sand bars area of Russell Island, next to the bridge that connects the 2 islands. Both islands are fairly small but you still want to rent a golf cart to get here as then you will probably venture further into the RW and grab a bite there (we highly recommend Sandbar Beach Bar & Grill, see my other review) plus after being "lazy" on the beach I wouldn't feel like walking back to the docks to take the ferry back to the "mainland" :) unless you stay of course either on SW or RI then that is a different story. The parking is super easy right past the bridge going "south" turn right - there is actually a small food stand there as well. Alternatively you can enjoy the sandbar from the SW "Public Park" as it's called on Google Maps - we enjoyed both areas but the RI gives more direct access to the water if you want to swim etc.

Read a review that you might see sea turtles here and it was spot on! Tons of turtles everywhere. If you have young ones that one to see them this is a great spot. Drive to the north tip of the bay and it is very protected.

You can park the car and walk onto a beautiful beach, then walk in about 3-4 Ft of water and then swim over the blue hole where the depth drops to 600+ Ft — simply amazing beautiful ?? Fish are everywhere !!

Saw the sign on the way in and and were curious. After Preachers Cave (go!) and Devils Backbone, we decided to take the little detour. It's a short drive from the road and so worth it! If I were a bit younger, would have jumped in and climbed the rope back up. Alas, I am not. But it was so very tempting. The water is truly sapphire blue.

One of several unusual underwater formations popular with divers.
Really interesting natural ocean hole. But even cooler fish feeding spot. Tons of snapper, parrot fish, and angel fish will come up and practically eat out of your hands. You can also swim but was a little chilly outside for us
