What to do and see in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape: The Best Private Tours

January 7, 2022 Carley Gatson

Oudtshoorn, the "ostrich capital of the world", is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, located between the Swartberg mountains to the north and the Outeniqua Mountains to the south. Two ostrich-feather booms, during 1865-1870 and 1900-1914, truly established the settlement. With approximately 60,000 inhabitants, it is the largest town in the Little Karoo region. The town's economy is primarily reliant on the ostrich farming and tourism industries. Oudtshoorn is home to the world's largest ostrich population, with a number of specialized ostrich breeding farms, such as the Safari Show Farm and the Highgate Ostrich Show Farm.

My family visited South Africa with Paul Coetzee from Explore South Africa twice, once in January 2017 and more recently in November 2019. We were a group of 12 people with elders above 60 and children from 13 to 2 years old.In both cases, Paul patiently helped customise our tour over several months via email and Whatsapp so that it could accommodate all our requirements for Muslim ( Halal ) food, accessibility and safety for the children. We did the Garden Route in 2017, driving from Cape Town to Port Elisabeth for 1 week with stops for safaris and garden route views along the way. In 2019, we drove from Durban via Swaziland on to a safari in Kruger Park and then to Johannesburg. The road trips were well planned with comfort stops and lunch breaks. Each overnight stop was a real pleasure in excellent accommodation and great facilities. They were facilities I did not find on internet booking sites and that seemed to be used by the South Africans for internal tourism. So it made using a local guide very much worth it. Paul is an extremely kind, helpful, patient and resourceful person who has dealt with our shopping sprees and large number of luggage bags with a lot resilience. He showed us the best of South Africa and relentlessly searched for the animals until we managed to see the big 4. The only one we didn't see was leopard. But he extended our last day driving down to the leopard trees areas to try and find one. He is very knowledgeable and is happy to explain and share information. I would highly recommend his services to anyone going to South Africa and wish him continued success.

Tldr: book this trip already!!???? I would 100% recommend this experience. We did our 3 day garden route tour from CPT to Port Elizabeth. Everything about my experience with Umzantsi was great. The trip was arranged on short notice and they were able to organize and deliver the most memorable experience ever. The communication and the logistics by Umzantsi were very well done. Peter Haller, our Tour guide was awesome. He knows a lot about the landscape as well as both the current and historical information about the towns/places along the route. It was just so much fun having him as our tour guide and getting all the interesting information from him. He made sure that we saw and experienced all the amazing places along the way. It is really a very rewarding and memorable tour.

My friends from Ireland recommended Rob at Cape Convoy and once I read the reviews the decision was easy. What to add to the reviews already written? We loved Rob! He was funny, knowledgeable and really knows what he is doing. It was just great fun. Recommended without hesitation. We took the tour in November 2019

A few years ago my family and I were looking for someone to help us plan our South African holiday and we discovered Cape Convoy in Trip Advisor. After Rob helpfully answered our questions we booked the Garden Route tour and it was a great decision. We all had a wonderful time, the kids lived Rob and the accommodation was well located. Rob also took us to the Cape of Good Hope and we loved the Penquins. If you're looking for a wonderful tour with a great guy then your search is over! Thanks Rob
