Nice view for sunset of Muang Xay and surrounding Mountains. You can walk up the stairs behind Dokbouadeng Guesthouse. When you walk down the road there's the red cross sauna and massage, local sauna for only 12.000 kip per person! Also recommended after a day of walking or hiking to.villages.

Nam Kat waterfall is located 23 km from Oudomxay Town and surrounded by one of the most untouched and beautiful pristine Forests in Laos.
The trek trough the bamboo jungle and the overhead wood Bridges were fun. For as far out it was my expectation was quite high. I was surprised to see how small it actually was. If your going there only for the waterfall and have seen others before you may be disappointed. If your an outdoor enthusiast you'll enjoy the long stroll.

We wanted to visit Ban Chom Ong and the cave by ourselves and not with an organized tour. It is actually possible to do it independently. You can take the bus to Luang Namtha from Oudomxay, or flag down any shared car service or songtheaw on the Oudomxay- Luang Namtha road. Hitchhiking didnt work for us so we flagged down the first songtheaw that came. You can also arrange a tuktuk or 4WD directly from Oudomxay bus station but they wanted to charge us the ridiculous fee of 1MLN lao kip.
Get off in Ban Nambotakaiy (you can find this name on any offline map or google maps or the map of the tourist information) with shared car or songtheaw this should not be more than 20.000 kip per person, tuktuk maybe double that. From Nambotakaiy there is an unsigned gravel road for 18km to Ban Chom Ong that you can walk in about 5 hours. You can ask villagers for directions! You will pass through 2 other villages first.
In Ban Chom Ong there is a homestay for 15000 kip per person per night. It is very basic and we thought the villagers were not that open and friendly as we expected, but it was still a cool local village experience.
The cave is 10000 entrance per person, and 50000 guide fee. A real steal for such an amazing, undiscovered and beautiful huge cave system!! Although our guide barely knew anything and couldnt speak english, the cave was awesome and a unique experience not to share such a sight with tour groups.
We stayed in the homestay another night and the next day we continued up the same road in the direction of Ban Mokha / Ban Nam Haeng. Don't be fooled by travel guides or websites saying it is a rough track, pickup trucks and motorbikes make this whole circle to and from Oudomxay every day. When back on the main road between Nam Haeng and Muang Xay there is more traffic. This intersection is about 3 to 4 hours walk from Ban Chom Ong. Hitchhiking was difficult again but we made it back to Oudomxay by 3pm. Remember there is no public transport out this way so if you want to make sure you get back you have to go back the same way to Ban Nambotakaiy to catch a Oudomxay bound bus or songtheaw.
All in all, very recommended experience and hopefully this information is a big help to independent travellers. Please try to avoid the organized tours as the local villagers don't benefit at all from this!
