Ōtsu (大津市, Ōtsu-shi) is the capital city of Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Ōtsu is known as the main port of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. It briefly served as the capital of Japan from 667 to 672 AD during the Asuka period (538 – 710). The city is home to numerous sites of historical importance, notably the temples of Mii-dera, Ishiyama-dera, and Enryaku-ji and the Hiyoshi Taisha shrine. Enryaku-ji is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities)". Ōtsu was incorporated as a city on October 1, 1898.

You can enjoy the terrace of Lake Biwa with a magnificent view overlooking Lake Biwa, Japan's elevation of 1,100 meters, north-south panorama. Attractions such as Skywalker and Zip Line are also available (reservation required). It is famous as the closest ski resort in the Kansai area.
For ski or snowboard, Biwako Valley Resort offer everything you need. You can rent almost everything like jacket (in a wide range of colour and size), pants, googles, boots, snowboard, skis, pole, hamlet at the Rental Centre off the carpark. You need to bring your own groves and wooly hat. There is no Rental Centre at the top of the mountain. Make sure you rent everything you need before you take the ropeway to the top. Some of the Japanese staffs at Rental Centre can speak English and they are very helpful.
