it is best to take the train from Sapporo. as soon as you go out of the facade of the train station cross the street and go straight until you see otaru canal. best to see it during winter. drop by otaru beer garden.

We weren't aware of this until we passed by. Lots of visitors, especially young girls bring their selfsticks or selfstands and take pictures non-stop. We did too. Top spot for Instagram. The Japanese really cherish their railway heritage.

We drove up to the observation deck and it was freezing! The wind was so strong that my 4 year old girl could not even walk when the wind was against her direction. Stopping by for that 5 minutes for a peek is worth it though!
