The political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of Russia, Moscow displays the country's contrasts at their most extreme. The ancient and modern are juxtaposed side by side in this city of 10 million. Catch a metro from one of the ornate stations to see Red Square, the Kremlin, the nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, the KGB Museum and other symbols of Moscow's great and terrible past, then lighten up and shop Boulevard Ring or people watch in Pushkin Square.

Last time I saw it was on a cold December day. I was looking at this imposing statue thinking that History was the best judge. Who remembers today those who murdered him or those communists who destroyed a monument to him later? Alexander II is not only one of the most respected rulers of this country. He cancelled serfdom which many compare to slavery. This is a stretch of imagination, I'd dare say. Anyhow, he did it 1861. Naturally, on the territory of the whole Russian empire. USA followed suit in 1900 (and not in 1865, as many think, because it was that year when slavery was abolished in Guam which is the territory of the United States). France did it in its empire in 1903 (French Sudan) and UK - in 1907 (Kenya). Unexpected comparison of "beacons of democracy" with "a totalitarian regime", er? A small plaza around this monument is great just to sit down, relax after tourist jogging through Moscow, take an ice-cream, watch a panorama opening in front of your eyes. And, yes, such masterpiece as Christ the Saviour Cathedral is nearby. Not to be missed. Both.
