Relive the glory of Ancient Rome with us on a guided visit to Ostia Antica in a Small Group max 12 people. Visit this once lively harbor town founded in the 4th century BC. Ancient Ostia is commonly referred to as “The Better Pompeii” due to the astonishing preservation of its buildings. You will stroll through ancient taverns, baths, apartments, groceries and theatres and their present condition so strikingly exceeds that of the Roman Forum, Imperial Forum and Pompeii, that it seems a misnomer to call them ‘ruins’.

Inclusions: Visit to the archaeological site of Ancient Ostia, 3 hours professional local guide, Small group tour max 12 people, Free transfer offered by Welcome Italy in air conditioning Minivan, Emergency number also operational via whatsapp, Hotel pickup and drop-off (central Rome only)

We'll do together a walk through the Roman ruins in this old town. Its history, rich and fascinating, is witnessed today by the countless monuments that are worth visiting because in excellent condition. The first settlement can be traced back to the beginning of the 4th century B.C. Only at the end of that century a squared fortified encampent (castrum) was built. This military camp, called Ostia from the Latin word Ostium meaning "mouth of the river", was established at a distance of around 16 miles from Rome, as a military outpost to keep under control not only the access to the Tiber and the nearby areas, in order to defend Rome. The city was then surrounded by a new circle of walls that is traditionally attributed at the time of Sulla. The walls circumscribed an urban area of about 50 hectares which could be accessed through three main gates: Porta Romana,Porta Laurentina and Porta Marina.

The tour of the ancient city and the Coliseum was excellent. We had one of the best tour guides. She was previously an archeologist so I felt like she had some real in-depth knowledge. She had a bright and charming personality. Her English was easy to understand. I had high hopes for Nero’s Palace tour. The virtual tour was very cool but short. Most of the palace is still being reconstructed so it was really hard to envision what it would have looked like. Not a lot of frescos to view. Mostly underground so take a jacket with you...it’s chilly. Might be great for a structural engineer with an imagination. The virtual portion was the only worthwhile part of the Nero tour.

Relive a piece of ancient Rome history, immersing yourself in this unique archaeological site on an unforgettable tour. The tour allows you to visit in depth a good part of this extraordinary archaeological site that covers about 50 hectares, in which ancient ruins and nature merge to create suggestive landscapes. Founded according to tradition by King Anco Marzio in a strategic area from the military and commercial point of view, Ostia was the first Roman colony, port of the city of Rome at the mouth of the Tiber river. Along the way you will be able to observe the grandiose theater dating back to the Augustan era, the Baths of Neptune and its mythological mosaics, the remains of the imposing Capitolium that towers over the Piazza del Foro and the famous insulae and tabernae. A unique archaeological site in the world where it is really possible to relive the daily life of the ancient Romans in a chronological span of 8 centuries.

We booked this private family guided tour of the site of Ostia Antica for the third day of our 4-day visit to Rome. My husband and I and our four children thoroughly enjoyed the very interesting tour by Stefania (a highly experienced tour guide with a phd in history and a vast, impressive knowledge in the field). Not only did she provide fascinating information to my husband and myself, but she made the tour fun and interactive for the children (aged between 14 and 9). The site of Ostia Antica is absolutely incredible, providing a good insight into daily life of a Roman city in the old times. Having an experienced and articulate guide like Stefania makes all the difference and is a worthwhile spend to got the most out of the visit. Stefania happily overextended the 1,5 hour tour time to provide us with some extra insights and information. Take the train from Porta San Paolo in Rome, the journey is a mere 1,50 euros and lasts about 25-30 minutes. The site is also excellent to beat the crowds (even in non-covid days) as it is all open air and fringed with beautiful big old trees. We caught the train again at Ostia Antica and continued onto the beachside to have an excellent lunch.

How about I post a few pictures with some travel advice for going to Rome Italy when we can travel again . We spend 8 days there and tried to see everything and failed. We did see the big sites including St Peters Basilica and Square, the Vatican museum, the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill, Pantheon, Colosseum, Castel Sant’Angelo, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, many churches including Santa Maria Maggiore, St. John Lateran,Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme and Santa Maria in Trastevere and the Borghese Gardens and Art Museum, But I'm going to add one more place we visited that we really enjoyed. It is Rome's ancient port, Ostia Antica, which is about 15 miles southwest of Rome and easily reached by a short railroad trip to the modern city of Ostia. We had recently been to Pompeii and Herculaneum on a visit to Naples and felt the same sense of awe in Ostia Antica that we had in those two famous Roman sites. At times it felt like an ancient Roman in a toga was going to show up around the next corner. Only about 1/3 of the site has been evacuated but it includes a great theater, a small museum, a temple, remains of an apartment building and warehouses. My advice is to plan an extra day in Rome, go out by train and then have a late lunch is a local restaurant (which we did). Now I'll post s few pictures. A couple from Rome and a couple from Ostia Antica.
