Kykuit

Grand home and grounds of this former Rockefeller estate offer a marvelous collection of modern sculptures, Chinese and European ceramics, fine furnishings and beautifully landscaped terraces and gardens. KYKUIT IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED UNTIL MAY 3. Please continue to check this listing or go to our website for updates.

I took the Kykuit house tour of the home and grounds. I did not expect to see such spectacular views and a Picasso art collection that was so extensive. Our guide, "Merla" was a treasure. She made every room and outdoor view come alive. The weather that day could not be better and the grounds were as interesting as the home. Be sure to go on a day when good weather is predicted. You will be amazed at the sheer beauty of the location as well as the extensive and priceless art collection. What was particularly special was how close you could get to the objects. So much better than any museum.

Union Church of Pocantico Hills

This unassuming country church contains a stained glass window by Henri Matisse and nine windows by Marc Chagall, all commissioned by Nelson A. Rockefeller. The enthralling story of the windows and how they came to be here is the story of relationships among distinguished patrons and collectors of modern art, two great 20th-century artists, and the leading connoisseurs and tastemakers of the day. WINDOW-VIEWING TOURS ARE TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE UNTIL APRIL 2. Please continue to check this listing or go to our website for updates.

Time: Visited Sunday mid-September around 4:30. Perfect for natural lighting for the Good Samaritan Chagall window and the Matisse Rose window.
Duration: Seasoned docent delivered a rapid-fire compelling narrative for each window. (15 minutes). Since a large tour group was to arrive, there was no opportunity for questions.
Gift: Purchase postcards or a packet at the back of the church.

Rockefeller State Park Preserve

We often go to Rockefeller to walk around the lake for our token exercise. There are many trails for those interested in long walks along the well groomed sandy carriage trails. Every one is surrounded by trees or grass. After storms the debris is cleaned up quickly. There are regular events to raise money and volunteers run the office. Seniors can apply for free weekday parking.

We really enjoyed the walk-thru pumpkin blaze! It took us about 45 minutes to walk through with our 1 year old and 3.5 year old! They seemed to enjoy it! Dress warm with hats and gloves as it gets cold; it was about 35 degrees when we went to the 6:30pm time slot on November 12th! Also, get there about 30 minutes early so that you could get the kids in their warm gear! We didn’t use a stroller, but kind of wish we brought one!

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

The cemetery was well kept and it was a beautiful fall walk. The graves were interesting and some were unusual. Interesting that Roosevelt, Carnegie, and Gompers were all in there together. Made for good commentary when discussing the gilded age in history class.
