Can you believe there once were a castle on this tiny hill? According to the legend (and history books), a medieval castle was built at this location by the Danes to protect the borders. At the time it was built this part of Sweden was actually Danish.
A man from Copenhagen was going to make a new bell for the church here. The man sent his apprentice Fante to Orkelljunga with a silver bell. However, when the bell rang, people could hear it all the way to Copenhagen. The master got suspicious of why the bell rang so loud and went to Orkelljunga. When he realized that the apprentice had used way too much silver in the bell, he killed him.
The hill was built by soldiers, trying to protect themselves from the Danes. Another war had taken place here, some decades ago in the 17th century. Then there had been a massacre. So the Swedes, with Gustaf Otto Stenbock in command, built Orkelljunga Skansar 1657 while waiting for back up. The Danish leader withdrew when he saw the Swedish camp.
