February 6, 2022 Marianna Hollaway

Popularly referred to as Ooty, this gem among southern hill resorts is covered in eucalyptus and pine trees and coffee and tea plantations. On a clear day, it's possible to see as far as the Mysore plateau from Dodabetta Peak, the district's most prominent viewpoint. The Stone House, a landmark 1822 bungalow, and St. Stephen's Church are remnants of the area's first British settlement. Also noteworthy: formal botanical gardens, a children's mini-garden and a contemporary art collection.

Upper Bhavani Lake

The lake is one of the best as far as I have heard among ooty tourist places. We started early from ooty to reach avalanche lake which is around 18-20 kms from Ooty main centre. But luck is not with us, as we are on the way, we had been informed that forest department has closed the road leading to the lake due to landslide. So we retuned without seeing the marvelous lake. I have some of the basic information which might helpful : To explore upper bhavani lake one has to reach around 9 or 9.30 AM at the gate of forest office as rush of tourist increases afterward. Tourist has to park their vehicle there and buy entry ticket to board the forest deptt. bus. Bus tour takes around 2 hours and three point covered are cauliflower forest, Bhavani Amman Temple and Upper Bhavani Lake.

Avalanche Lake

Reviewed By rashmimilan - Bengaluru, India

Bored by the usual crowded tourist spots of Ooty, this time we enquired with our tour operator to take us to a not much visited place away from the hustling-bustling crowd. He suggested us Avalanche. We decided not to Google and find any detailed information as we wanted to experience it all fresh. And was quite surprised that we were not disappointed at all. The Jeep drive from the pick-up spot to Avalanche was so exciting through scenic forests and valleys with a stop-over in between by a small stream overlooking a beautiful temple which stood a top of a valley. We were suggested to drink the water directly that was oozing out from a point of small rock which they believed was the starting point of a river which converged into the valley to become the massive river. Avalanche - absolutely no words. A heaven on earth. With wild yellow and pink flowers strewn across the valley. I almost dropped my plan of visiting Valley of Flowers in the Himachal for a moment. The century old pine trees added to a perfect bollywood scenic destination. Must-visit if you want to cherish your trip to Ooty.

Pykara Lake

Reviewed By TrishtinaH - Mumbai, India

The lake has clean, greenish water. We went in the month of April, evening hours for boating. The boating is generally closed by 5.30 pm. The boating experience in the speed boat was breathtaking in the beautiful picturesque lake. It was quite cold. The speed boat charged us around 840 Rs for a duration of 10 minutes, and the good point is that they instruct all tourists to get in the boat with life jackets on. You have few cafeteria wherein one can sip hot coffee and have snacks and ice- creams. A must visit place if you are visiting Ooty.

Pykara Falls

Reviewed By sanjayvora45 - Ahmedabad, India

Pykara falls is around 15 kms from ooty city centre and on Gudalur road. This is the most visited place in ooty. Pykara Falls and Pykara Lake-Boating Point are different location and separated approx. 2-3 kms from each other, and one has to take go-around route for reaching boating point from pykara falls. Pykara falls is a beautiful natural streams of water, rather it is a cascade and not a falls, amid dense pine forests. From car parking, 500 mtr. gentle walk upto tkt. counter and then some 100 steps to go down to reach the falls. Electric car is available to reach upto entry point with a charge of 20 Rs for one side. Pykara falls having mesmerising view and photogenic location. You can definitely spend 1 or 2 hour to see the beauty around. Must be visited after monsoon season, so that water level is optimal and greenery at it's best.
