What to do and see in Omonia, Attica: The Best Food & Drink

March 25, 2022 Phylicia Berquist

Once known for smog, traffic and tacky architecture, Athens is a city reformed thanks to fortunes brought by the 2004 Summer Olympics. Spotless parks and streets, an ultra-modern subway, new freeways, an accessible airport and all signs in perfect English make the city easily negotiable. Meriting more than a stopover en route to the islands, sophisticated Athens sites include many pillars of Western history, from the Acropolis to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as treasures in the National Archaeological Museum.

Athens Culinary Backstreets Walks

On this walk we will explore the culinary backstreets and secrets of downtown Athens, in search of the soul of this historic yet always vibrant city. We’ll visit an old-school dairy bar and a hidden gem of a loukoumades joint. We’ll sample souvlaki, and a kebab made according to a recipe brought to Athens by refugees from Constantinople. The walk will explore the hidden seafood eateries of the stoa, the arcades that are among downtown Athens’ most unique architectural features. There will be a few sips of homemade spirits, accompanied by an unforgettable bite in the center of the main fishmongers’ market. At once rough and beautiful, ancient and modern, the culinary backstreets of downtown Athens live on and tell the story of this city in a way few other landmarks can. CookinAthens

I live in Athens my entire life and I am a passionate food lover and food blogger. I love cooking so much that I created my food blog, www.marislurp.com , about five years ago! Recently I created CookinAthens, a cooking studio, designed to make you love Greek food even more and where you will not only taste authentic Greek food but you will also learn how to cook it. At CookinAthens we have created a cozy environment where we cook traditional Greek food the way our grandmothers used to do.

Reviewed By Chprig - Athens, Greece

We booked thr mezedes cooking class with a group of friends coming from abroad. Marilena was fun and interesting and also a great cook who taught us a lot of new cooking tips. We cooked about 9 different Greek mezedes which all were very tasty and easy to make. Plus the cooking studio is absolutely delightful, sunny and spacious with a view of the Acropolis. It was a lovely experience for all of us and we highly recommended it.

Athens Free Food Tour

The Free Tour concept has been around for quite a while but is a relatively new way to discover cities compared to the traditional tour concept The tour are 'free', because unlike regular tour providers' services, there is no set price for taking a tour, apart from the food expenses (around 15€). Instead, you are free to 'tip' your guide as you see fit after your tour.
