Omodos (Greek: 'Ομοδος) is a village in the Troödos Mountains of Cyprus. It is also located in the Limassol District of Cyprus and is 80 kilometers from the city of Nicosia. The village produces a lot of wine and holds a wine festival every August. You can visit a 17th-century stone-built monastery via a cobblestone path and sample local wine for free at many outlets. You will also find a good mix of restaurants including traditional tavernas and a few modern bars housed in traditional buildings.

This beautiful Monastery, which serves as a working Church, sits right in the heart of Omodos. I was surprised that much of it dates from the 19th Century - I thought it was a much older building, although some parts date back to the 14th Century. It was very busy when I visited but it was still peaceful and dignified. Features include gold-plated iconostatis, frescoes, a beautiful basilica and relics that include a section of rope said to have bound Christ to the cross. Shoulders must be covered when entering the Monastery and photography is not allowed.

I wanted to visit this museum as it has is the place where my aunties clothes are on display along with all the others who were killed by the British soldiers in July 1958 and I was born in August of that year an emotional visit so much history so much bloodshed during those times innocent people of Cyprus caught in the crossfire. Interesting and emotional.

We were in the area on a drive out from Kouklia up through the lovely Diarizos valley. Just called as saw they were open. Lovely, traditional family winery and given an enthusiastic tasting of 5 wines by a lovely lady. . Free nibbles of salami, local cheese and snacks. Highly recommended.
