This church was originally built on the highest point in the city of Olinda in 1537. When the Dutch invaded in 1631, the church and much of the city was burned. It was rebuilt in 1676, when it was elevated to the status of a Cathedral.

Olinda worths a day-trip when you are in Recife and have some time to spare. I recommend to take a taxi/uber and start your visit from the Cathedral and then walk down the hill and aprecciate the archicteture , the local artist ateliers and the amazing view of the see.
