What to do and see in Old Toronto, Canada: The Best Gear Rentals

January 6, 2022 Marianna Hollaway

We've heard Toronto described as "New York City run by the Swiss," and it's true—you can find world-class theater, shopping and restaurants here, but the sidewalks are clean and the people are friendly. The best place to start is literally at the top—the CN Tower, the tallest freestanding structure in the Western Hemisphere.

At the end of the trip, the bikes were returned rapidly with no paperwork required

I've been using Bikeshare in Toronto for nearly 7 years now, and it has been life-changing. So I actually feel my heart break a little bit when I see all these bad reviews. I really do feel for those who did not realize that the bikes can only be out of their docks for 30 minutes at a time. To be fair, this is very clearly articulated on the website, in the description of every pricing level for each pass. But it sounds like the company needs to do a better job at clarifying this when it comes to new customers whose first experience is with the automated direct-payment kiosks at the stations. I strongly suspect that the company may not have been prepared for the huge uptick in ridership during the COVID-19 shutdown this year. As great as these bikes can be for sightseeing, Bikeshare was mainly designed as a network of commuter bikes. This is the model that many Bikeshare programs around the world (Paris, Montreal, New York, etc) already followed before we got them here in Toronto. The system is well-designed for serving travelers who are going from Point A to Point B. If you are going from one fixed place to another in the downtown core, it is rare that a trip will take you more than 30 minutes, and this way the bikes keep circulating and nobody takes them out of the network for an extended time. Again, I recognize that this was not communicated clearly enough when the system received a major influx of sightseeing or casual riders who had different needs and expectations. I really hope that will be addressed better in the future, because so long as you know the perameters, the actual experience of using these bikes to get where you're going is truly amazing. That's why I give them 5 stars in this review, based on my overall experience. The bikes are sturdy and solidly made. I have had very few mechanical problems in 7 years of regular (sometimes daily) ridership, and I have never had any safety issues while riding. I love that I don't have to pay for tune-ups or repairs, as I would if I had a regular bike of my own. Even better, in this city notorious for bike thieves, I love being able to lock the bike up when I'm done with it and let go of all responsibility for that bike after I leave. Pretty much everyone I know who bikes in the city has had their bike(s) stolen, at least once, and I am so thankful not to have to deal with that anxiety. The passes that you can buy are for an unlimited number of 30-minute trips, not unlimited minutes all at once. This concept can take some getting used to, but truly once it becomes part of your routine it becomes second nature. (And as noted before, the security of locking the bike up at one of the docking stations whenever you are not using it is probably in everyone's best interests, both customers and the company, so that there's no opportunity for someone to swipe it while you're not riding.) A yearly membership of unlimited 30-minute trips costs about $100 - less than a one month pass on the TTC. Bikeshare has given me more mobility and freedom in my life than I could have had with any other form of public transit. Do they need to make the the rules clearer for new riders? Absolutely. I hope that when they do, more people will give this program a try and experience the same level of freedom and enjoyment that I have.
