WANDER COMPASS BEPPU is an unconventional tourist information center in Beppu. We provide wide range of services for those traveling in Japan. Services provided include itinerary support, lounge with wifi, guides and many more. There is also “Tomodachi Guides” or “Friend Guides” who could assist you in creating the perfect plan from scratch and guide you around. Don’t have any plan yet? Please feel free to stop by anytime during your Beppu Trip :)
I came to Beppu with a friend for a one day trip and visited Wander compass. As I had already been here for the famous Jigoku, Onsen and steamed food (that i recommend), we decided to rent the shop bicycles and opted for a ride along the beach, after visiting the local park to see the Plum trees and bamboo. We finished the day with a more local experience in the oldest onsen for Ashiyu and Sand bath! (Try the mud or sand bath while in town). We had a great time spending the day with the staff member (Chika). They will guide you through all the common and less common spots and activities in town depending on what you’re looking for! The shop is located at the station so i recommend you to pay a visit if you are in town :)

It is definitely worth visiting, or I rather say it is worth traveling to Kyushu to visit Usuki Stone Buddha. There are four different areas, you can see many statues of Buddha, which are engraved in grottos. There are explanations in multiple languages by scanning QR code. That is quite helpful. The area is not very big, and it takes maybe about one hour. In front of this site, there is a field called Stone Buddha Park. As I visited, flowers were in full bloom.

We went during a very quiet period, parked at the pottery museum and walked down, it is very special, pottery made in the area dating back to 1700's (I think) I enjoyed the video in the museum, although there is no translation so guesswork if you don't know Japanese, ancient way of attaining clay powder still in use. Peaceful Working kilns, didn't see anyone sculpting but pots etc drying and being sanded Lovely to browse and admire the pieces for purchase but not be monitored as people are elsewhere going about their work. Brought two small pieces

I knew that Taki Rentaro got the inspiration of his famous melody of “Kojyo no Tsuki”, and thought that it is just ruins of an old castle. Indeed, it was a good surprise. Oka Castle ruins is a wonderful place to familiarize with the great nature. The distanced view of Kujyu mountains is fantastic. Outside of Hokkaido, there is still some place like this in Japan. It is a new discovery.
