Most of the châteaux in Bordeaux do the same thing: tell you the history of the place and its owner, show you the vines, vats and cellar, talk about the vinification process, then pour a wine or two to taste. What made Château Gruaud-Larose different are a few things: - our guide (Stephanie) was very knowledgeable about wines and winemaking - the visitor centre is stunning — you get to sit taste the wines amidst the vines in the sunlight! - you could better appreciate the wine — you’re seated on a comfortable couch and get some expert tutoring from your guide - the cheese pairing (€15pp supplement) was very good! - our tour (booked via email) was private — possibly not by design, but nonetheless a welcome one; my partner and I weren’t being shuffled from one place to another as part of a big group We tasted their first label (2003 vintage — already beautifully aged) and their second label (2012, very approachable), and I ended up bringing home a bottle of their second label as a souvenir.

We had an interesting visit to this chateau where a lot of investment has made it perfect. Our guide was very informative and the wine tasting worthwhile.
