A unique monument in the world, located right in the middle of the sea, at 4.350 miles to French coasts. Every year, it opens its doors to 25 000 enthusiast visitors keen on discovering lighthouse’s history. Get on board in a boat from Gironde or Charente coasts and you will land 4.350 miles in a sandbank surrounded by the ocean: it’s down the lighthouse that adventure begins. Cordouan is like no others: it remains the oldest French lighthouse still in use, while still hosting lighthouse keepers. They are four, taking turns in pairs all year, to provide the site maintenance, but also welcome visitors, showing around the monument. Cordouan lighthouse is a military art structure, classified monument since 1862. During the visit, you could admire a room of great rarity: the chapel of “Notre Dame de Cordouan” situated in the second floor, which is certainly the most majestic part of the structure.

Both the newer and older lighthouses are impressive buildings. We arrived too late to go up but the area was still open so we could walk around out to the oceanfront. At low tide you can see the fish pens, which were used to trap fish that got stuck behind the stone walls as the water was receding. Such pens have been used for hundreds of years and this one is one of the last ones remaining on the island. It has to be periodically repaired, particularly after major storms, but it shows the . At first glance they look like submerged walls of an earlier village - and quite pretty at sunset.

The views by the lighthouse in all directions are beautiful. And the cite contains a monument to the Franz Hals, a enormous trawler that grounded on the main beach in Biarritz without being destroyed by the rocks.. Search for a picture of it on line. It is amazing.

Worth the drive to the end of the island, great views, plentiful parking, small fee to climb the lighthouse. If you have small children or adults who wish to be children north beach access gives rock pools and interesting rock strata. There are cafes, shops but a lovely picnic site should you wish. Sadly the madding crowds are there in abundance.
