What to do and see in Northeast Region, Iceland: The Best Specialty Museums

The Transportation Museum at Ystafell is the oldest car museum in Iceland and has one of the largest collections of cars in the country. It also features many other types of vehicles and plenty of antique treasures to discover.

The Folk Music Centre in Siglufjordur is located in Madame House where the Rev. Bjarni Þorsteinsson lived from 1888 to 1898. The centre brings to life the world of Icelandic folk music.

Explore the fascinating journey of Iceland’s 100 years of aviation history. The Icelandic Aviation Museum was formed in 1999 and opened its doors on the 24th of June in 2000. Its goal is to preserve the history of flying in Iceland, to record the stories of those who have taken part in this and to promote the importance of aviation in our country. In addition to an interesting variety of aircraft and artefacts, there are photographic displays that depict various facets of aviation history. Also on display are ultra-lights, aircraft engines, model aircraft, airport equipment, a flight simulation trainer and much more. Together the exhibits illustrate the story of Icelandic aviation in a lively way. Of interest to many, are artefacts recovered from the wreck of a British R.A.F Fairey Battle which crashed in the mountains to the wast of Akureyri in 1941? The Icelandic Aviation Museum is a living entity in constant renewal, with many of the aircraft still actively in use and flying.

The Herring Era Museum is Iceland's largest maritime museum - where the 'glory days' of Iceland's herring fisheries and industry are brought back to life in three different buildings. Róaldsbrakki, a 1907 salting station and bunkhouse. On Saturdays featuring a live outdoor salting show and accordion dance. Grána, a 1930s-era fishmeal and oil factory. The Boathouse, the town's thriving harbour of the 1950s with many old fishing boats at the dock. The museum is officially recognized as a museum specializing in the history of the herring fisheries in Iceland. It may even be the only museum of its kind in the world. Winner of the Icelandic Museum Award in 2000 and won the European Museum Award in 2004, as Europe's best new museum of industry and technology.

In the oldest house on the Island a museum has been set up where you can learn about the history of shark fishing in Iceland and the story of the Island. The house was recently renovated and brought to its original state and as well as the museum, it also houses the Tourist information which is open 1pm - 5 pm from the start of June until the end of August.
