Mostly jutting northward from its largest city of Amsterdam and its capital of Haarlem, the Noord-Holland region has much more to offer beyond those two wonderful cities. At Muiden is the magnificent Muiderslot Castle, as if it stepped out of a fairy tale. Showing more wear but no less interesting is Brederode Castle at Santpoort. At Zaanstad is Zaanse Schans, one of Holland’s top tourist destinations and a family-friendly open air museum of windmills, traditional buildings, crafts and shops.

The eastern end, near the Golden Bend, is not for raucous thrill seekers. It's quite placid, though move back, around the Rembrandt Square, and it's lively. It is centrally located--perhaps 15 minute stroll to museum square and 10 minutes to Dam Square. The city is extremely walkable--compact and flat.

Lovely area to have a stroll around, even in the rain! Everybody ignores it in the city. Walked there alone at night and felt safe

The most delightful stroll along this lovely canal bank - an array of little restaurants and cafes create the most wonderful atmosphere. Just watch out you don't step into the cycle lane!!

Start with a cup of coffee or tea in the Bakery Out near the little bridge in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. Did you know that Ouderkerk is the founding place of Amsterdam? After the stop go left over the bridge. First part till you pass the highway A9, aprox. 2 km, you enter the world of the oldest Polder in NL. Enjoy the ride!
