Sunday morning 18th November and we visited São Jacinto Island (reviewed separately) where this charming old Church is located. Both are visible from the Panaji Vasco Highway, with access from the Highway over a causeway, called Silver Gate Bridge by the locals. The Church is also known as St. Hyacinthi Church, and its Patron Saint is St Jacinto, whose feast is celebrated on the last Sunday of September. On entering the Church we walked down the aisle which is covered with old mosaic tiles, looking upwards we could see the roof had a wooden framework with exposed terracotta roof tiles. Part way down the aisle, mounted on the wall, is a wooden carved pulpit. At the far end of the aisle is where the tall wood carved altar stands with the winged cherubs at the top of both sides and a number of religious statues. There were a number of other shrines around the Church. From the altar looking down the aisle, towards the entrance, there is a small balcony above the entrance. We sat for a few minutes on one of the wooden pews/benches and enjoyed the serenity of this gracious old Church. According to a notice in the grounds of the church, which indicates that the Church is 165 years old There was a bit of excitement in the Church as they were preparing for a baptism ceremony. Standing outside the Church there were views down along the Zuari River.
