What to do and see in North East, Pennsylvania (PA): The Best Budget-friendly Things to do

August 23, 2021 Toi Mattera

North East is a borough in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States, 14 miles (23 km) northeast of Erie in the northernmost part of the state, and the county's northeastern corner. Fruit growing was an early economic endeavor, and is still to this day, as this is a popular area for especially cherries and grapes. There is an annual Cherry Festival in the summer and an annual Wine Country Harvest Festival in the fall. It contains one college, Mercyhurst North East. The population was 4,294 at the 2010 census, down from 4,601 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the northernmost town in Pennsylvania. The name "North East" seems to be a misnomer since the borough is located in extreme northwestern Pennsylvania, but it is so named for its northeastern-most location within Erie County.

Penn Shore Winery and Vineyards

Penn Shore is located at the center of Pennsylvania's grape-growing Lake Erie shoreline, just a few minutes' drive from Interstate 90 along picturesque Route 5. We offer wine tastings year round and tours during the summer months and winefest. We also host our yearly summer concert series "Music in the Vineyards" featuring live music on the back patio every Saturday in July and August from 5-9pm. Admission and parking are free, with food vendors on-site, non-alcoholic beverages and of course wine (and beer) for sale. Just bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit back and relax with. (No outside beverages permitted.) There's always something fun happening at the winery, so stop in and see us!

The hostess was extremely friendly and explained the various alcohol related rules in PA and NY during the pandemic. The bottles are reasonably priced and the patio is very quiet and relaxing. When we purchased two bottles to go, she asked if we wanted a cardboard case to keep the bottles from clinking together (as we had discussed picking up bottles at other wineries). I highly recommend a pit stop to anyone that is in the area

Inviting, friendly, clean, beautiful, breathtaking view, and the wine is fabulous. Sam, his wife, their dog, Cabernet, is a family you will want to meet on the wine trail. Their boat theme and feel drew me in, and their employees sealed the deal, not to mention the wines. Of the 14 (out of 23) wineries, we are grateful we didn't miss this one. Definitely try the Shipwreck White AND Red, as well as the Sunset Blush. You won't regret it.

Such a delightful winery! I have tried other wines from this winery at farmers markets in my city, but had never been to the winery itself. Finally, I took a trip with my sister in law, mother in law, and sister to Erie’s wine country. This was a must on all of our lists, and we weren’t disappointed. It was by far our favorite, and the wines were wonderful. Chocapelli has been a favorite of mine and my husband since a wine festival in our home city, and I was thrilled to bring him home a new favorite, Lazy Daze. Well worth the trip, and my favorite winery.

South Shore Wine Company

The South Shore Wine Company, re-established by the Mazza family (of Mazza Wines) in 2007, sits in a historical Civil War Era stone wine cavern that was originally home to the first commercial winery in Erie County. Sister winery to Mazza Vineyards, also in North East,South Shore features its own unique line of table, premium, fruit & specialty wines. Also home to the wonderful Vintage Cafe!

You have to visit South Shore Winery when you are in the Erie area. The place is fantastic! You walk down the steps to this beautiful "cavern" setting with the amazing brick walls and just can't believe you are in a winery. And the tasting room is just as beautiful in the rear. Of course, the wines are the best too. Try the Concord! You will love it!

My wife and I have stopped at Arundel Cellars twice during the last six months when travelling in the neighborhood. Their wine shop offers affordable tastes ($2.00 for 6) of excellent wine but we wish they would rebate the tasting fee if you spend more than $30.00 on their wine afterwards. If you are on a wine tour, a stop at Arundel is essential. While there, pick up a bottle of Time-Keepers Port before launching your time machine somewhen else.

In our post-covid world we took a trip to Mazza on a weekday and it was great. Due to new restrictions, you do have to purchase food and be seated in order to order wine but it was nice. The wine was great, they have proper safety protocols in effect and the vineyards themselves were beautiful. The ice wine was SWEET but unique and delicious.
