We entered the Rest Stop at MM 100 on I-85 to "use" the Rest Stop and wound up seeing a really nice and interesting potential tourist attraction. I noticed the sign to the Memorial and decided to walk down to it. You'll walk down a short hill, go across a one lane bridge, and get to a parking lot. You walk a little more and come to a well mowed field with the Memorial at the far end. It's a red brick wall with bronze plaques as its center panel. Each plaque has the name of the more than 1600 North Carolinians killed or missing in Vietnam. Very, very nice!

Thomas Wolfe's childhood home, immortalized in his 1929 novel, "Look Homeward Angel," is preserved intact as a lasting monument to one of the 20th century's most prominent writers. The house, originally operated as a boardinghouse by his mother, retains most of its original furnishings and is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Tours of the 29 room house are offered hourly. The adjacent visitor center and museum highlight Wolfe's life and major literary accomplishments.
This is the boarding house that was the childhood home of Thomas Wolfe and his family. It is maintained as part of a memorial to the local author and is next to a modern structure erected by the city to showcase his life.

The angel that Thomas Wolfe described in his book "Look Homeward Angel" is located close to his memorial.
Of course I wanted to see it becasue of all the other reviews, but this statue was beautiful and very well maintained considering its age.

My husband and I stopped at the welcome center to use the bathroom and upon leaving we saw a small parking lot with a trail, so we got out and went to see what the trail led to. This monument is really cute and provides a lot of detail/history of flight. I would recommend a quick visit to check this out.

Built as a shrine to honor the NC State students and alumni who died in WWI. The Shrine Room has a memorial plaque with the names of the 34 who died plus 1 more to honor all those students and alumni who fought in the Great War. On 1 May 2018 the first of the 100 world wide WWI Centennial Celebrations was held at the Bell Tower. Not only was it the 1st but it will be the only one held on a college campus. Quite an Honor.
