Historic National Cemetery and Confederate Prison Site

Reviewed By Concordcouple2020 - Concord, United States

The location was not easy to find. There is a cemetery annex behind the V.A. hospital which some websites list as the location. The historic cemetery contains a mass grave with over 11,000 unknown Union soldiers buried there. The cemetery is not very large and is easy to walk around.

Cedar Grove Cemetery

Reviewed By RussellW145 - North Carolina, United States

Just across the street from the police station, this cemetery is nice for a quiet walk, local history, and interesting monuments. Today, there were a few other people there enjoying the grounds, including one with a bicycle. Dogs are allowed, and plastic bags for canine waste are available. The roads are made of oyster shells. Paths go in between plots. With the first day of Spring, Parks and Recreation will likely be out and about caring for the grounds. There are some plaques with historical facts, and other information, on them. Both the cemetery, and the Extension (across the street) have mailboxes that may contain brochures, though none were available today. Toward to the center of the cemetery is a monument to Confederate soldiers who died during the Battle of New Bern. Large trees with moss hanging from them lend a cemetery feel. Parking spaces can be found on two sides, and the location is just outside of downtown. The site is reputed to be haunted, and ghost walks are held hear on Halloween. The Extension is still active for burials.

British Cemetery

The remains of four British soldiers whose ship was sunk off the coast during World War II are buried here.

This cemetery is truly historic and a beautiful tribute. You'll only need to pul over for a few minutes to take it in. The stones/memorials explain who they are and why they are there. It's a quick sight, but worth your time to pay respects to these soldiers. Very glad we stopped.
