My wife and I visited Black Mountain for a morning stroll to various stores. All are very unique in their own way. Sassafras was located by the Railroad Station and is a Book Store / Coffee Shop full of local gifts. A must visit when shopping in Black Mountain.

Malaprop's Bookstore / Cafe

Reviewed By 72DonnaW - Kennesaw, United States

We visited Malaprop’s to get out of the cold early on a Monday morning visit to Asheville. First, we visited the coffee bar for a warm-up, the selection of beverages was wonderful and interesting, with colorful names for its unique drink recipes! Our coffees were served hot and delicious, perfect for sipping as we browsed the store. What we found most intriguing about Malaprop’s was its focus on Asheville-based books. Whether it is a travel guide, hiking, food and cooking, or even local-interest fiction, the selection of unique regional offerings was striking. Also, books had interesting arrangements by genre: banned books took up one end cap, along with sections such as beautiful books, top sellers of the week employees’ recommendations, and “blind date with a book.” This last category we found most amusing, as each brown-paper-wrapped book is unknown to its buyer, except for a brief and intriguing description written on its cover as a summary of its contents. This seems such a fun way to “meet” a new read! We throughly enjoyed our browse through Malaprop’s, and recommend it highly as a little slice of Asheville’s culture!

The Strand at 38 Main

Not your average Movie Theater! Featuring first run movies, a full espresso bar, craft-churned ice cream, handcrafted sodas, draft beer and wine in Downtown Waynesville, NC.

Reviewed By AltsLJ - Lake Junaluska, United States

This restored vintage theater is a great place to watch a movie while eating popcorn, a delicious ice cream cone, drink a specialty coffee or one of The Soda Jerks homemade sodas. Padded chairs are placed close together in rows so once in a row it's hard to climb over others to leave the show room. However, it's a great place to enjoy an evening out when one of the current movies is being shown. We always look forward to supporting this local business.

Sovereign Remedies

We had a great time here. The room was getting subdued due to the late hour on a Monday night, but the bartender was a wild man who kept us entertained the whole time we sat at the bar nursing our drinks and chatting. The room is quite beautiful with high ceilings, and old Asheville vibe, and an almost endless series of objects on which to rest your eyes. Music was loud but didn't prevent us from chatting and the drinks were superb. As Arnold Schwarzenegger said, I'll be back.
